You only have to look at the established Torres who is struggling to fit into his new team when comparing the likes of Henderson & Carroll.Id prefer them to be instant hits like Ashley Young has been for Man U but it takes time to settle.

As for the points about Man Utd being an average team and being knocked out by Barca, lesser side than Real etc...they strolled the league by being playing to win as a team(rather than relying on individuals, i recall Rooney having a shocker of like 10 games or so?).Im hoping that Dalglish is instilling the same ethic in that playing for each other instead of yourself is the way forward.

On the total spend and with FFPR coming into play, how are other teams shaping up?Anyone can fill me in on that?

Good post <ok> this is what I like to see. Not idiots comparing players they dislike from amount of goals they have scored in World Cups etc...

Good bit of analysis here if you're interested:
    http://andersred.blogspot.com/2011/04/financial-fair-play-crunching-numbers.html

    with Liverpool's 09/10 results here:
    http://andersred.blogspot.com/2011/05/liverpools-200910-results-underline.html

Basically, on the most recent financials, Utd and Arsenal are making big profits under FFP, and Spurs are roughly breaking even. Liverpool were running at around a £38 million under H&G, so subtract the debt and they're also breaking even (assuming the loss of CL revenue is roughly balanced by the new sponsorship deals). City and Chelsea, as expected, were running big losses in 09/10, but will probably be able to get their income up and costs down over the next couple of years by controlling spending. What impact this has on their performance, only time will tell...

Also a more detailed analysis of City here:

Reading through this thread makes me laugh. Just before the season started fans of rival clubs were laughing at United's signings saying that United are weaker than last season. After losing Scholes, van der Sar, O'Shea and the like and replacing them with younger players. Yet now they see how well they have bedded in, as if they have been at United for years has made them perform a U-turn

Young has come in and looks like a United player instantly. 6 assists and 2 goals in 4 games is a great start. Jones, who is 4th choice central defender looks as if he would slot into any side in the league's first XI and at 19 he has at least 10 years along with Smalling (who was laughed at for £10m last summer)

Then not forgetting our loanees who have returned Cleverley and Welbeck, who have slotted in perfectly and have given us an extra dimension to our game. They have been integral to our great start and have helped implement our one touch passing which was missing a lot of the time last season.

Only thing with the 6 assists is two were a roll to Rooney, lol. Either way he has started brightly and I think we both made good purchases in regards to Young and Downing. Downing might not have the stats, but he adds that missing dimension to our team which was width and he has played well. unfortunate not to have a few goals and assists already.

Yeah but they were some rolls! They all count at the end of the day though.

I agree Downing has been impressive for Liverpool and seems to have gotten that consistancy he never really seemed to have in his previous years at Villa. I think he will be similar to Valencia when we signed him. Nothing flashy, just loves getting down the wing and putting crosses in and obviously chipping in with a few goals.

Downing has been consistent, spectacular on a regular basis? maybe not. He would be comparable to Antonio Valencia at Man United and I pointed that out on another thread, he like Valencia is consistently consistent. He will not let anyone down, thats the sort of player he is. If you want entertainment, thats Luis Suarez area of expertise.
I do agree that Ashley Young has hit the ground running for you lot, I just wonder if he can keep that level of performance up consistently as it was him and not Downing that had a tendency to be erratic. Young was Man Uniteds Nani to Downings Valencia.

The Swiss Ramble is another good one, but a bit too...well...rambling for my taste! Their posts also always seem to tail off with the kind of general conclusion that leaves you feeling like they've just recycled what everyone else has said. Like the one you've highlighted - the conclusion is that Utd make lots of cash and it's gonna be really difficult to replace SAF. Well, durrrrr ;)

    Back to topic
As a LFC fan i have to say that we have done some good deals 1 or 2 that i'm not convinced about only time will tell
This window has had some English players move to EPL teams and all the players have hit the ground running
Even Man U new players hurts to admit that but it's true

This is a good post and interesting thread. I'll try not to be too partisan with my answer.

Manchester City already had a very strong squad and in terms of pure quality, look to me to have had the best summer in terms of quality signings.
Utd was a strange one for me.....I look at last season and they seemed to limp their way to the title, nobody else challenged them, despite their terrible away record! I did wonder whether they had the experience in depth that they'd need to defend their title but this has been emphatically answered already with some of the kids just stepping into the fold seamlessly.....and rather annoyingly! ;-)
Chelsea - I did question how their midfield unit could possibly function at the very top; but they went and bought Mata and Meireles and a couple of others that I cannot rate yet. They may well of bought well for the future.
Arsenal as usual bought a couple of kids for the future; you have to admire Wengers ability to bring the kids through, even if he doesn't seem to grasp the need to balance the team with winners/experience/leadership....again, perhaps some signings for the future but a degree of panic seemed to set in after their mauling at OT
Spurs - you could argue that the best bit of business they did was keep Modric - although we all know how form can dip if a player isn't happy!.....I'm not so sure on their deals this year at all.
and Liverpool? Highly functional in terms of our signings: no superstars but all extremely solid players at what they do....in terms of what was essentially needed, it was a very good summer. I do wonder what our transfers would of been like had we qualified for CL.....would we have still purchased the same players or would we have been closer in the hunt for Mata, Aguero, Clichy et al.....Time will tell I guess.

So in order of who's had the best summer in terms of signings, for me it's:

    1. City (on quality)
    2. LFC (functionality)
    =3. Chelski
    =3. Utd
    5. Arsenal
    6. Spurs

Would any of you think that Man Uniteds new signings Young and Jones are ''fuctional''. They fit a purpose, Jones is a defender...he defends, Young plays wide and attacks opposition full-back. Are both spectacular?, no chance. Both do a job and are good at the job they do.
They are somewhat similar to Liverpools signings in that they are more consistent than spectacular. Man City made the glamour signings this summer in Nasri and Aguero.

But that is typical of most players United sign in the past. The last spectacular signing they made was Veron in 2001 and look how that turned out. People laugh at United and say they are skint when they bring in players like Hernandez and Smalling but look at how well they turned out. Even Liverpool fans will admit they laughed when Carrick was brought in or Valencia but Ferguson knows everything about them and he knows they can do a job.

In a sense Dalglish is the same, old school, he will sign players who want to play for the club. Not because of the name and suddenly these Liverpool fans who were crying out for top name signings like Mata and Aguero are realising that players like Bellamy and Adam want to play for the shirt. He did it at Blackburn and won the league so in future maybe Liverpool fans will have a bit more humility when United go in for a hardworking young English player instead of a fancy player with an exotic name from the continent.

    MUFCOK.
    Good points.
It is better to sign players that fit into a unit than just signing names. Man City signed Milner for the name, and he's done absolutely nothing, Liverpool got rid of a player like that.....he's called Joe Cole and we signed him on a free and didn't pay £24 million for him.
I do think Ferguson if he shopped around would have got a better player than Carrick for half the money, if he had to go abroad. Carrick is nothing more than an average premiership midfielder.

Comas/99 It is still to early to say which club has made the best signings for this season. If your going off the 1st 4 games then the best signings you would have to say are Sergio Aguero with 6 goals in 4 games, and Samir Nasri already with 4 assists in 2 games.

Before we decide which club has made the best sigins let us wait until at least the clubs have the games over Christmas and the New year over, and discuss this topic again.

Aguero has a hattrick against Swansea and Wigan. Doesn't Berbatov get slated for scoring 2-3 goals in a few games and none in others?
