Don’t say the Ellis word mate. For the odd gaffer he sacked correctly, I bring you Keane, Bruce, Di Canio. A ballsack looking power whore with no idea and even worse advice.
I preferred his little hoppity skip and his look behind for the 3rd goal. He was so excited he didn't know where to put himself
Posted it several times before so not going to do so again but there's an interview with de Fanti in which he claims he only brought in such a **** bunch of players because Ellis told him he needed to bring in X number of players but only gave him £6.23 and a packet of Chewits to do it with. I don't blame de Fanti too much because what he says is probably right.
Unlike di Canio though, Buffon has claimed that he didn't understand the links between those things and Fascism/Nazism.
So, Buffon, as the face of Puma for many years, had a better team advising him around marketing etc. No way on earth did Gigi ‘not understand’, he’s a supremely intelligent fella. In short, maybe Paolo should have spoken with Buffon’s PR guys.
Yeah, exactly. Buffon knew to downplay all that stuff. Presumably he was happy to keep any connection he felt to that stuff slightly more private than Paolo. It was more part of the persona that Paolo built up around himself though, as one of the Laziali, indeed as a former Lazio Ultra. So he probably didn't want to downplay it in quite the same way as Buffon has done.
Aye but he had no choice, he could hardly have said "yeah so what, heil Hitler lol". Denial was the only way out for him but I doubt many believed it. Di Canio has several times over the years explained that he's not remotely racist and has nothing but contempt for nazis and that although some aspects of fascism align with his own views they're the sort that are explainable and understandable. I didn't see it as big deal then and I don't now, yeah the media would probably kick up a fuss again, to a lesser extent I imagine as time has passed since the original 'controversy', but there's no substance to it and it'd die down quickly. I'd hire him if I was a club owner and thought he would bring success.
No, I don't see it as a big deal either. I've got his book upstairs and what he actually says about Mussolini is quite measured. The fuss that was kicked up about him when we hired him though was ridiculous and, as it wasn't just the press, clearly some people did see it as a big deal. To be honest, I think Buffon wanting to use 88 is probably worse than what di Canio has said. It's well known in much of Europe what that signifies. He's just played dumb over it all and it's been largely forgotten about for some reason.
Way worse imo, Di Canio's beliefs won't sit well with everyone but they're not without value and reason, saying and believing heil Hitler is an another level entirely. I reckon if Di Canio was as good a manager as Buffon is a keeper his own controversies would have been forgotten a long time ago.
Maybe they would. I think it's a useful stick for the press to beat him with though. I wonder what Buffon's image is like in other countries in Europe. It might have gone a bit more under the radar here because I'm not sure the significance of that number is as widely understood in this country. I suppose if his image was poor though, he wouldn't have got all the various advertising deals.
Firstly - he's a pretty poor singer... Secondly - the original of that song is absolute dog ****... Don;t think I need to point anything else out!!!
