Sunderland fan banned for pushing Newcastle goalkeeper

    Sunderland 1-1 Newcastle
A teenage Sunderland fan who invaded the pitch and pushed Newcastle United's goalkeeper to the ground has been given a three-year football banning order.

Ross Miller admitted common assault on Steve Harper and a public order offence at the end of the Wear-Tyne derby at the Stadium of Light on 16 January.

The 17-year-old of Tangmere, Spennymoor, County Durham, was also given a sixth-month referral order.

Sunderland Magistrates' Court was told that he had apologised for his actions.

The Sunderland season-ticket holder has visited Newcastle United's training ground to offer a personal apology to Mr Harper, and written to Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn, manager Steve Bruce and Northumbria Police.

Under the conditions of the banning order, he is prevented from going to any Sunderland or England fixture.

In a statement released to the press Mr Miller said "This is a great result for me. For years my Dad/brother/uncle has dragged me to watch that ****e with him every week. It's like watching paint dry. Now I have the perfect excuse to stay at home on Saturdays and interfere with my sister."

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "Banning orders are an effective tool to help us ensure we can weed out those people who are intent in causing trouble."

I'm firm believer in second chances.

If he reverts back to supporting SAFC though then he should be burnt at the stake.

Agree it should have been a life time ban, but the judge thought it was a harsher punishment by allowing him to go back!!!!!!

But for now he'll have to watch the games in the pub with all the other sunlan fans <laugh>

Let's hope the Skunks who caused real violence on the pitch at Darlington, and were not teenagers like this lad was, get a 10 year ban then.

Shouldn't the authorities be making sure he can't stay at home alone with his sister on Saturdays?

    I doubt they'd mind a 10 year ban from Darlington's stadium.

The pitch incursion shouldn't have happened but there was no intent on causing violence. The Darlington supporters running over the field to get involved were the only ones with trouble on their minds.

Hang on a minute, when did Sunderland get the "60 minute makeover". It was never that smart the last time I was there.

Is it too late for an obvious joke about them dramatically reducing attendances because of this?
