If one murder automatically equals life imprisonment, there’s no incentive not to go on a killing spree. Might as well.

Yeah this is the counter argument to life without parole. They have literally nothing to lose so can basically do whatever the **** they want with no real punishment.

Yes, thanks. The point is if you’re thinking rationally and one murder = x years there’s a clear disincentive to commit a second murder. If one murder = life guaranteed you risk the murderer going for the police or committing some other crime as there’s no reason not to.

That doesn’t equate in reality as it’s not a mathematical problem. People kill for a multitude of reasons, hatred, enraged, jealousy, avarice etc and I’d imagine very few are pre-meditated. Also most killers are known by the victims and seem to be a spur of the moment thing. During this rage I don’t see would be killers totting up the mathematics wondering how long they might get.

If it’s an automatic murder = life there would be no maths required and if all murderers are people who warrant locking up forever then who knows what they might be capable of. Take away that disincentive and you open up a whole load of potential pain for the innocent people you’re trying to defend.

In the absence of capital punishment life in prison is the deterrent how does that cause more potential pain to the public? I’m my view it makes the public safer.

  8. Exactly.

    It's cruel and degrading treatment.

For the exact reasons I’ve stated. You’re advocating blindly giving life to anyone regardless of the circumstances around their crime. You might as well do your best to fight out of it or take out a few of your enemies before you go away under the system you want in place. I’m suggesting treating each case on its merits as not every person who commits what is classified as murder deserves a full life term as there’s likely to be some extenuating circumstances.

Wait on there, there’s always mitigating circumstances ie as someone dying during a fight and hitting their head fatally as that would be manslaughter which is a totally different thing altogether.

No, I don’t trust them to give life for the offence of murder number one. Being that in a 10 year period 30 released killers that killed again. Of course if they could be trusted to do that there’s no need for capital punishment.

Unfortunately friendship is something Stan has always struggled with.
