The number of cases which warrant a true life sentence must be a tiny fraction of the overall prison/wider security budget. The lack of funding across the entire legal system is horrific though. I’ll agree on that.
Exactly. The death penalty as a so called deterrent has never worked. Centuries of history have shown that. It’s retribution pure and simple, but as a so called civilized society we can’t admit to something as primal as revenge, so we try to dress it up in pretty clothes and call it a deterrent!..
Not for me. Lots of crimes of passion, people intoxicated at the time, younger people committing the crimes etc. I wouldn’t favour a blanket rule like that for a crime which varies so much. Serial killers absolutely but we’d risk the higher profile cases getting harsher treatment, in my humblest of opinions.
Britain has currently 8544 prisoners serving life (highest in Europe). We also at present have just over 93,00 inmates. That’s just a little over 9%.

Absolutely correct, the highest rate of murders (USA) per state, per capita year on year also have the highest amount of people executed and on death row. Penn and Teller did a really good show on this years back, worth a watch
Tobes is correct as regards to whole life prisoners. As for the remaining 8444 they will no doubt be released and some will kill again.
Probably out of 8544 some will. From what I’ve heard you’re more likely to be a hardened criminal type when you come out than when you go in. Just look at Andy Dufresne.
Dont you find it just a little tragic that an innocent persons life can be snuffed out by a returning to society killer who should have remained incarcerated?
The best way to avoid this happening 100% is to make sure the killer is dead, failing that, remove arms legs and that would probably make it much harder to reoffend.

No, I’m not having that one bit! People like you have said over and over when ever his debate raises its head, that if one innocent person is executed then the whole systems a farce/failure, yes! Well laddie boy it also works in the reverse that if an innocent person is killed by a released offender. I would vote for the abolishment of capital punishment if it wasn’t run by like minded people like you who values the perpetrators more than the victims. Life means life EOS!
Fortunately you won’t get a vote on it, as populism would probably see a referendum won by advocates of the death penalty. Which is why there’ll never be one.
