During my lfetime as a Saints Supporter we have had some great Goalkeepers in that time some of them big names in football. Here are the names i remember.Who are the ones that you remember and what was your verdict on them? Also some of you are older than me so you can also mention and rate other keepers you remember also any i have missed out in my list. Here Goes Ian Turner 1974-1979 77 apps I dont remember too much about him because i was not born until 1972 but our FA Cup winning Keeper has to have a mention. Peter Wells 1976-1983 141 apps I mostly went to reserve games when i was younger and Peter Wells was a regular reserve. I remember one reserve game Saints v Arsenal and the Arsenal keeper was none other than Pat Jennings. A load of kids ran on the pitch to get Pats autograph. The Ref told the kids to leave the pitch so they could start the game. Pat Replied when i've signed these autographs then we can start the game. Ivan katilinic 1980-1983 48 apps Mainly remembered by me for his dodgy mostache. He had his address in his car once so wrote him a letter asking for a signed photo which he kindly sent Peter Shilton 1982-1987 188 apps What can you say except Englands number one. Fantastic keeper. Will forgive him for scoring his one and only goal which was at the Dell against Saints whilst playing for Leicester. Eric Nixon 1986- Loan apps 4 Only played 4 games so can't really comment. Shilts must've been injured Tim Flowers 1986-1993 192 apps Very good future England keeper. Made his England debut whilst at Saints a 1-1 draw against Brazil John Burridge 1987-1989 62 apps Budgie has he was know loved to swing on his crossbar Ian Andrews 1989-1994 10 apps Not many appearences but capable when called upon Dave Beasant 1993-1997 88 apps Lurch was a bit of a calamity at times but served Saints well IMO Bruce Grobbelaar 1994-1996 32 apps Accused of match fixing whilst at Saints but did save an Alan Shearer penalty Neil Moss 1995-2003 24 apps A little bit out of his depth at times IMO Chris Woods 1996-Loan 4 apps A former England Keeper but not a very good one IMO. Only played 4 games for Saints including letting in 7 goals against Everton. Enough said Maik Taylor 1997 18 apps Never knew much about him when he came from Barnet but I thought he was quite impressive whist he was here. Dave Jones disagreed with me though and replaced him with Paul Jones. Paul Jones 1997-2004 193 apps Followed Dave Jones from Stockport. Calamity at times but made a lot of fantastic and important saves too. Must be one of a very few Goalkeepers to keep a clean sheet in an FA Cup final and end up on the losing side without penaltys. I also remember a Wales v Finland international With Paul Jones in goal for Wales whilst he was still at Saints. In goal for Finland was a certain Antti Niemi also a Saints keeper at the time. Alan Blayney 2001-2006 3 apps Only made 3 appearances but will always be remembered for that save against Alan Shearer mentioned in another thread. After that game Manager Paul Sturrock said we had Niemi and Smith out. It would not have surprised me if he'd have broken his leg just to let poke have a go. Antti Niemi 2002-2006 106 apps The best keeper to play for Saints since Shilton. One of the newspapers if they are to be believed claimed that Alex Ferguson tried to hijack his move from Hearts but Niemi said he had agreed to join Southampton and that was where he was going. Michael Poke 2004-2010 4 apps Never going to be first or second choice Bartoz Bialkowski 2006- present 22 apps Very good keeper on par with Kelvin Davis not much to choose between the two IMO Kelvin Davis 2006-present Kept on his toes by Bartman and current No1. Showed his loyalty to Saints by signing a new deal on the day he was due to sign for West ham when Markus bought us as he felt He shared some of the blame for our relegation and wanted to help us back up. Richard Wright 2008-loan 8 apps Fairly safe set of hands with KD out injured did very well IIRC.Wouldn't have minded if we had kept hold of him. Do you agree or disagree? Over to you
Loved Niemi..we were so lucky to have a goalkeeper of his calibre. Most Saints goalkeepers have been good stoppers who have the odd off day...otherwise they would be playing with bigger clubs. Niemi was the complete goalkeeper.
Niemi was definitely the best I've ever seen play for us. That said, I do like Kelvin for not just his ability but his loyalty too. Same for Bartman, who will no doubt don the #1 shirt when we get into the Prem
No i didn't he has not played for the first team yet! besides i don't think the mods would tolerate all the swearing. lol
OK, I'll add in Gerry Gurr and Eric Martin. Gerry Gurr: 1966-70. 49 appearances. Good keeper with an excellent kick out of his area. Career at Saints halted through a shoulder injury. Eric Martin: 1966-75. 289 appearances. Good, reliable keeper, nicknamed Harpo [Marx] because of his hair. Perhaps someone else can mention Campbell Forsyth, as I have no recollection of him, even though I know from records that I saw him play several games. There was also David MacClaren, who famously was the Wolves keeper who let in NINE goals in their 9-3 demolition at The Dell. We signed him for a while..!
Really rated Miak Taylor, thought he was badly treated by Dave Jones but he went on to forge a very successful career in prem with B/ham. I thought we bought Taylor out of the army.
Just remembered we had Sundeland's Jim Montgomery [he of the famous 1-0 against Leeds Utd, FA Cup final] for a while, but he didn't like the south [too warm], and just a few years ago we had Spurs' Casey Keller, for a few games, and he was surprisingly good.
Campbell Forsyth signed December 1965, took us to the First Devision, then broke his leg against Liverpool at the Dell in September 1966. David Webb put the goalie's jersey on for the rest of that game so he must count as a goalie as well! Dave McLaren replaced Campbell for the rest of the 1966 - 1967 season Eric Martin played 290 games from 1967 to 1975 until replaced by Ian Turner. Forgot about Gerry Gurr!
We are lucky with our present GK and having a good back up. People complain about Kelvin, but do they think teams in the lower divisions can keep the Niemis and Flowers of this world. At our level, he is a fantastic keeper and I'm sure will take a coach/spare GK role in the future.
IIRC we signed him from Barnet.I think maik was born in Germany because his dad was in the army i might be wrong.
Team photo in Saturday's programme according to OS, but only got KD and Bart as goalkeepers. It was taken at the open day and Forecast was there but not included in photo. Any thoughts.
Shilts was amongst the best in the world when he played for us. He's head and shoulders above any other I've seen in a Saints shirt. Next 2 are Antti Niemi and Tim Flowers, with an honourable mention for Ian Turner (despite a dodgy start to the cup final, he was our winning keeper). Dissapointments were Maik Taylor, who was a solid keeper trated badly and Paul Smith. I heard from someone who knows David Coles, that he had really high hopes that Smith was going to be top quality. It never really worked out for him.
fairly sure you missed out a few other gk's of the last few years...paul smith, james shea ,kevin miller ?
imo i think that niemi is the best goalkeeper i have ever seen ( only 15 ) just his whole attiude during games and training , never had a massive ego and i considered him best keeper in the pl at the time
