Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish has defended Andy Carroll following recent criticism of the striker's lifestyle from England coach Fabio Capello.

Carroll was a subtitute in England's win against Wales after Capello said: "If he wants to be a good player he needs to drink less than the others."

But Dalglish insisted: "His fitness would stand up against anybody's.

"I don't think his lifestyle is anything like you want it to be to write a story."

The Liverpool boss added: "Andy was not properly fit last season because of a knee injury.

"We are pleased with his fitness this season because he's lost that injury."

Carroll, 22, has started two of Liverpool's first four games in his first full season at Anfield following his move from Newcastle in January.

The forward has scored once, in a substitute appearance in the Carling Cup victory at Exeter - but netted twice against Manchester City last season in a 3-0 win.

Dalglish added: "I think Andy is very appreciative of advice from anyone who has a good standing in football.

"I think he appreciates Fabio Capello's advice because he has great respect for Fabio Capello and I think Fabio Capello has great respect for Andy Carroll."

Just watched it gonz,as usual he kicked the sky journos arse.

He also had to kick arse when asked why he signed Bellamy, the journo asked Kenny if Craig's temprement worried him,Kenny told the prick that Craig has packed in playing golf.

I am happy that Carroll is not scoring. Why? In an ideal world we would love all our strikers to be on form. As other have their slumps I believe Andy will have found his feet and it is a good thing. When Rooney was not scoring Hernandez and Berbatov were slowly doing the the Biz. He later found his form and enabled Man Utd to push for the league.

We have seen it before with Crouch when he went 17hrs without scoring so its not new to us as Liverpool. He will come good.

I love it when Kenny talks to the media. They can never tell if he is serious or joking, even when he lets rip.

Every stringer in the UK knows that they are on to a big fat payday if they can come up with a verifiable story that Andy Garroll even thought about stepping out of line, So far they have got nothing! Now I don't say they never will but this is really a no-story.

As for Capello, he's an idiot! His man-management skills are worse than Rafa's. He proved it at the World Cup and again with Carroll. If he needed to say anything to Carroll then it should have been between him and the player not for public consumption. His tactical skills are even worse! Who puts 3 bricks like Lampard, Barry and Milner in midfield and expects some creativity - AT HOME?

    Dave.
    I agree.
Only an utter imbecile would play Barry, Lampard and Milner in a 4-4-2. There is no creativity. However a cleverer manager, would have done something like this.
    Rooney

    Downing Young.

    Lampard.
    Barry Milner.

Now its Wales, not Brazil, so there is no need whatsoever for a defensive holding midfielder. Play from the front, keep them pegged back, if you need a bit of muscle up front, throw Andy Carroll on and take Lampard off.

Good managers support their players publicly, but privately, one one to one with the player it is more than that.
    Well done Kenny Dalglish.<applause> <applause> <applause>

A clever manager would have played...

    ----------Carroll---Rooney------------
    --Young------Wilshere-----Downing----
    ---------------Barry-------------------
    --Baines---Terry---Cahill---Johnson----
    ---------------Hart--------------------

If Gerrard was fit, I'd put him in place of Wilshere with a free role, he scored quite a lot of goals for England just outside of the box in that particular position. There's a thought to getting rid of Downing from that system and playing with 2 AMs and 2 DMs, but I don't think Wilshere has enough pace to launch into a counter attack like that, and we'd end up playing too defensive.

Good call to replace Cole with Baines. He was shockingly bad, and he doesn't seem to do much in a Chelsea shirt anymore.

Yet another example of the increasingly inept media, looking for a "sensational" headline.

Kenny just put the tw4ts in there place.

Kenny's conferences are comic cold. He refuses to be wound up by any sensationalist remark and proceeds to pick the journalistic numpties apart.
