Is your memory playing tricks with you? Have you forgotten we won the league and cup double in 1971 and reached 3 further FA cup finals in the 70's, also finishing 2nd in the league in 1972/73 (as high as we've finished at the Emirates). The 70's saw some of the best players Arsenal have ever had viz; Brady, George, Radford, Stapleton, Ball and McDonald. The Emirates years so far have provided some of the msot average players we have seen.
We had some dross in the 70's aswell eg Mancini,Blockley,Marinello. There were also a couple of seasons where we were involved in a relegation fight
Bad as that was at times i never saw us get tonked 8-2 in those years. Everything is relative but i'd still rather be watching Brady et al than what we've seen lately.
I'd rather see the likes of Brady rather than some of the players of today but there again i'd rather see some of the players of today rather than some of the players of the 70's
Some of the worst players ever to don the Arsenal shirt... from the bygone era: Blockley, Mancini, Hillier, Helder, Jensen, Selley and Carter... from the modern era: Kaba Diawara, Aliadiere, Baptista, Cygan, Stephanovs, Squillaci, Denilson and Almunia.
And how can I forget Mikael Silvestre, possibly one on the worst players ever to wear the Arsenal shirt.
True there were some good times, but after our double season and Cup final loss the year after we were a poor side 74-77 flirting with relegation more than once. Ironic that greed existed even then, and yes I'm thinking Frank Stapleton who bore the brunt of the loudest and most aggresive chant I ever heard at Highbury.....
That's true although it will be interesting to hear the chants aimed at Nasri, Clichy and Adebayour come to the Emirates this season. I'd settle for a domestic double and three FA Cup finals this decade. not that we're likely to see either anytime soon.
Remi Garde was another who didn't have much opportunity to show his worth IMHO. He has AFAIK enjoyed much more success as a manager. Arsene it was I believe who first recommend him to the club back before our great manager himself was drawn into the hallowed marble halls of Highbury. Who knows? M. Garde may one day find himself in the footsteps of M. Wenger.
I'm quite interested to see some of the players named Selley, Luzhny & Denilson are or were average players & not useless. If fact Luzhny was highly rated before he joined us Eboue is a very decent right back. It's not his fault he was mostly played out of position. Shame about the diving though Jensen not the most talented player, but worked his socks off for the team and was an effective midfield destroyer. Like many other Gooners. I was gutted when he was injured & couldn't play the Cup Winners Cup final in his home town of Copenhagen. Remi Garde A quiet unfussy player who had limited opportunities, but always done a decent job when called on. I'm surprised no ones mentioned Lee Chapman who was absolute **** for us but had a decent career at Leeds
Well said on all counts! Denilson is not top class but in the right team playing the right role he could be an effective player, nonsense to suggest he would be one of our worst all timers..
You fink? That's dangerous that is, you finking. I'd ave a sit down or sumfink before ya do yaself a mischief
