Well, Sunday will mark the 714th anniversary of the Battle of Stirling bridge.

That'd be the last time Scotland beat England in any major tournament.

  4. Well, first they had to pay Spanish pirates to blockade our one and only colony, wait for a crop failure and famine until the country went bankrupt and then buy us.

    Country of gentlemen.

  8. this is true. <ok>

Other European countries set about getting colonies though and didn't have to contend with a larger neighbour paying their own traditional enemies to stop it.

There were riots all over the country when the treaty of union was signed - our own upper class sold us all out, man.

Darien was a monumental **** up from start to finish. There's no point blaming England as the Spanish would never have tolerated a rival colony on their doorstep.

  11. It wasn't just pirates - the settlers had a few ding-dongs with the Spanish Navy as well.

Whilst not blaming the English outright for its failure (that Paterson clown that suggested the whole thing - his name was dirt afterwards), they capitalised on it.

One thing that came out of the mess was the formation of the Royal Bank of Scotland.

Now there's a fine institution that has never caused us any hassle <ok>

That would, in part, explain why I once saw a chap in Coatbridge wearing a smart suit, at the time I just assumed he was attending either court or a funeral but now it seems possible he was the King of Scotland.

Scottish people need to shag more, up your wee population and then bully your permanently aggrieved little neighbours.

    It's fun. <ok>

(so is shagging and we obviously have always done a lot more of it, we all started equal. I'm moving onto Scottish girls next).

Every time we went on lads holidays it was always the English lassies we chased after. They were easier.
