LFC fitness latest: Klopp on Lovren, Wijnaldum and Shaqiri


Jürgen Klopp has provided an update on the fitness of Dejan Lovren, Xherdan Shaqiri and Georginio Wijnaldum ahead of the Champions League tie with Bayern Munich.


Liverpool host the Bundesliga side at Anfield in the first leg of their last-16 clash on Tuesday night.

A return from a hamstring injury remains a possibility for Lovren, while the Reds will assess Shaqiri in the final hours before the game.

Wijnaldum has been back in training after a bout of illness.

Asked for the latest team news on Monday morning, Klopp told Liverpoolfc.com: “I don’t know 100 per cent. It’s Monday and we play on Tuesday so most of that should be clear.

“Gini trained and looked really well. Shaq did a lot, so it will be close, we have to see.

“Dejan, I actually have to wait minute by minute if there is a chance or not.

“But that’s pretty much all, I would say.”

Klopp on Fabinho and defensive options for Bayern tie


Jürgen Klopp discussed the possibility of Fabinho playing at centre-back as he looked ahead to Liverpool's Champions League meeting with Bayern Munich.


The Reds will be without Virgil van Dijk for Tuesday night’s last-16 first leg due to suspension and Dejan Lovren faces a race against time to recover from a hamstring injury.

Fabinho could therefore be deployed in defence, though Klopp stressed there will be a collective responsibility on the whole team to keep the German giants at bay.

“If – if – [Fabinho plays there] in the Champions League against Bayern Munich it’s not an easy job,” Klopp said at his pre-match press conference on Monday.

“But we thought it makes sense we don’t leave our last row alone defending against Bayern; [so] it all depends how we defend in general. That’s it.

“There will be a lot of moments where we have to defend and we worked on that, we tried to work on that because we respect the quality of Bayern Munich a lot – speed, technique, experience, it’s all there what you need to be successful.

“We respect that and we try to make the best of the situation.”

Anyone remember the time we played Bayern when Alan Hansen and Tommo , I think we’re out of the back four and King Kenny was out too. Back then we always had the confidence that any of the squad good enough to wear the shirt were good enough. We are good enough to beat united and Bayern if the players are in the right frame of mind
