    Another pre-season beckons with us dragging our heels behind the rest.

    The ultimate nightmare, we start the new season with Ajose and Magennis up front.

    Phil Parkinson at Bolton made a lot of effort to sign Magennis in January. Let’s hope PP comes calling again this summer. Magennis is useless.

    Particularly as Bolton are in a league above so Magennis may well be keen on a move.

    Josh Magennis is one of only two players in Charlton's first team squad who has scored more than 9 goals for us in his league career.
    He has a total of 20 goals from 81 appearances.

    The only other player in double figures for goal scoring is Igor Vetokele (12 goals from 57 appearances) who has not played a game in our shirt for two seasons. His last goal for Charlton was against Rotherham in the Championship in January 2016.

    Tarique Fosu (9 goals from 30 appearances)
    Patrick Bauer (8 goals from 89 appearancs)
    Nicky Ajose (7 goals from 33 appearances)
    Jake Forster-Caskey (7 goals from 56 appearances)
    Joe Aribo (5 goals from 45 appearances)
    are the only other players of any goal scoring note. Their total is 36 career goals from 253 appearances.

    Allowing for the fact that these players make up roughly half of our starting XI, we can work out roughly how often they score on average.
    253 divided by 5 (half the number of our outfield players) = roughly 51.
    36 goals in 51 matches = about 3 goals in every 5 games

    So roughly every 5 league games that Charlton play, the players listed above in blue will score 3 goals between them (0.7 goals per game)

    ~~~
    All of our remaining outfield players have scored a total of 18 career goals from 684 appearances.
    Even when Chris Solly's 250 appearances (and 2 goals) are removed from those figures,
    the rest of our current squad of outfield players have only scored 16 career league goals in 434 appearances.
    Our remaining outfield players will make up roughly half of Charlton's starting XI on average,
    So using the same formula as for the players listed in blue - 684 divided by 5 = about 137
    18 goals in 137 matches = just over one goal every seven and a half games.
    So roughly every seven and a half league games, the remaining members of Charlton's squad will score 1 goal between them (0.13 goals per game)
    ~~~

    In a nutshell, Charlton have been starved of goal scorers for the best part of three seasons now.
    If we are going to win promotion back to the Championship next season we need to sign a couple of proven goalscorers and avoid Charltonizing them, which we apparently did with Lee Novak and Nicky Ajose.

    So who is responsible for the fact that we haven't signed a decent striker for years? Our scouts? Or Roland refusing to put his hand in his pocket? Probably a combination of both. Even if we had a decent striker under Roland he'd sell him as soon as an offer came in. Roll on the takeover.

    I see the Powell debate has predictably started again on the Wally site, with nauseating comments about how nicely he was dressed yesterday.

    Nobody denies that Powell is a good bloke, but if any other manager had brought that team to the Valley yesterday playing that brand of anti football, they would have been coated. Why the double standards?

    Time wasting. Feigning injury. Numerous bad tackles. Surrounding & heckling the ref. In short, a dirty and cynical side.

    Powell is at the right level and at the right size of club now, in terms of his managerial capabilities.

    The 100 point season was a fluke in his career, just like Robinson’s promotion season at MK Dons when he had Dele Alli.

    First up, if you were away from home against a team who are capable of playing much better football than your team, and you find yourself a goal up but a man down after only 30 minutes, what would you do?
    Was Powell supposed to encourage his ten men to play expansive football, and so let Charlton roll over them and win the match by 3 or 4 goals?

    And your claim that the 101 point season was a fluke is just silly wummery.
    God knows we enjoy precious little success at CAFC. Why rubbish the little we have enjoyed just because you're annoyed that the manager of that success wouldn't roll over yesterday and let us beat his current team?

    The whole Powell question is just a novelty side-show that crops up a couple of times a season.
    In 48 hours it will all be forgotten, despite any froth which members on another forum might be generating.

    Wouldn't mind another fluke season if it meant winning the division with a record number of points.

    It is very unlike Mr van Gerwen to wum and stir things up, give him a break on this occasion.

    It was two seasons of fluking as we finished within a whisker of the play-offs the next season.

    How many of us on this particular part of not606 are Huddersfield or Southend fans?
    Erm, none I think.
    So who cares what Powell does at those Clubs?

    Only those Charlton fans who have no respect for him or what he achieved in his time at CAFC.

    If it's OK to have no respect for a manager who achieved what Powell did, then I don't see a need to show any respect to Lee Bowyer.
    But then, I'm not an apologist.
