Not exactly, but the equivalent on 6 cassettes: MCA 6-80,000 (Published 1979) However, I compiled my own reel-to-reel collection of every one of Buddy Holly's released tracks in 1962-63. I brought the tape with me when I emigrated to Canada, lent them to an old mate from Hull (school) who emigrated here too,so he could record the tracks. Never got it back. He died last year (over here) so no chance of me getting the original back. I don't know his 4th (final) wife ! I went to school with the son of one of my dad's old merchant navy pals from ww2 (Trans-Atlantic convoys mainly). My dad retired from the Merch after the war, but my schoolfriend's dad stayed at sea. He was a big fan of Buddy Holly and brought everything he could when over in the States. I borrowed all the vinyl - 78's. 45's and LP's he brought back and recorded them on my old man's reel-to-reel recorder. My old man had been a radio operator during the war and knew his stuff. Of course - since the advent of the net, I've replaced every track in digital format. I think there are roughly 120-130 recordings (published) by Buddy Holly. Probably twice that number of gig recordings (TV etc) in circulation. That's in the space of just less than 2 years of exposure. Unbelievable talent. _______________________________________________ Quote from the end of the link you included> "Summing up – fans have waited years for a CD replacement of their beloved "Complete Buddy Holly" 6LP/6MC Box Set from 1979 by the wonderful JOHN BEECHER and MALCOLM JONES – and this tastily presented homage is the closest they’re going to get to it. What an artist and what a legacy. Rave on indeed… PS: For fans, I’ve created an album-by-album Discography referencing the entire contents of this box (took me a while that) – it’s available in a detailed pictorial version via my Blog - Mark Barry's Discographies and Reviews..." _________________________________________________________________ The contents of the ^ cassette compendium I have: https://www.discogs.com/Buddy-Holly-The-Complete-Buddy-Holly/release/9605308 Tracklist 1. cheers, i'll compare that listing with the one i've got. i first got into holly at school because of one my friends. he had a 9-disc 1973 vinyl box set called The Complete Buddy Holly Story on MCA Coral COPS 7100-H/1-9. it's currently in my possession and includes a poster and a 16-page booklet (in english and german). it includes a few interview tracks, plus a message from his parents, and the two tracks with jerry allison singing as "ivan". the tracks include those finished with help from the fireballs. some years later it occurred to me that a cd box set was long overdue and i knew paul mccartney owned the copyright to the songs, so it was just a case of waiting, and then i pounced on it with both feet (and made sure my friend benefitted). the aforementioned 2009 6-cd set contains 203 tracks (which i can easily list with a little help from my old friend mr dos). there are severa alternate versions and failed takes of some songs (eg: mona, which isn't on the 1973 album), not to mention versions with and without the fireballs. also some with tweaks for radio jingles, etc. i did buy a double cd some years back that was of german origin and it was obvious to me that one of the vocal was not buddy holly. my friend suggested it might have been david box, a later crickets lead vocalist. as it happens, last xmas one of my friends bought me a triple-cd album called the barry records story and it includes a track by david box called "If You Can't Say Something Nice". it's on youtube (i'd include a link, but i'm trying to keep this post as small as possible). the 203 tracks - you'll excuse me if i get as many as possible onto each line. the first 15 on disc 1 i've listed as buddy&bob (and altered the running order a little to put them together). all others are down as by buddy holly, ignoring whether they were listed as the crickets or bh and the crickets. Not Fade Away - The Complete Studio Recordings And More disk 1 (35 tracks) [i've changed the sequence here so that the first 15 listed as buddy & bob] I'll Just Pretend, Take These Shackles From My Heart, Footprints In The Snow, Flower Of My Heart, Door To My Heart, Soft Place In My Heart, Gotta Get You Near Me Blues, I Gambled My Heart, You And I Are Through, Down The Line, You And I Are Through, Baby, It's Love, Memories, Queen Of The Ballroom, Memories, [remainder as buddy holly] My Two-Timin' Woman, Baby, Let's Play House, Down The Line, Moonlight Baby (aka Baby, Won't You Come Out Tonight), I Guess I Was Just A Fool, Don't Come Back Knockin', Love Me, Midnight Shift, Midnight Shift (false start), Don't Come Back Knockin' (alt), Don't Come Back Knockin', Blue Days, Black Nights, Love Me, Baby Won't You Come Out Tonight, I Guess I Was Just A Fool, It's Not My Fault, I'm Gonna Set My Foot Down, Changin' All Those Changes, Rock-A-Bye Rock, Because I Love You disc 2 (36 tracks) Rock Around With Ollie Vee, I'm Changin' All Those Changes, That'll Be The Day, Girl On My Mind, Ting-A-Ling, Rock Around With Ollie Vee, Modern Don Juan, You Are My One Desire (false start), You Are My One Desire, Gone, Gone, Gone (alt), Have You Ever Been Lonely (incomplete alt), Have You Ever Been Lonely (alt), Have You Ever Been Lonely, Brown-Eyed Handsome Man, Good Rockin' Tonight, Rip It Up, Blue Monday, Honky Tonk, Blue Suede Shoes, Shake, Rattle And Roll, Bo Diddley, Ain't Got No Home, Holly Hop, Brown-Eyed Handsome Man, Bo Diddley, I'm Looking For Someone To Love, That'll Be The Day, Last Night (undubbed), Maybe Baby (first version), Words Of Love, Mailman Bring Me No More Blues, Not Fade Away (alt), Not Fade Away, Everyday disc 3 (34 tracks) Ready Teddy, Valley Of Tears, That'll Be The Day (Greetings To Bob Thiele), That'll Be The Day (Greetings To Murray Deutch), That'll Be The Day (Greetings To Bill Randle), Peggy Sue (alt), Peggy Sue, Listen To Me, Oh Boy (undubbed), I'm Gonna Love You Too, Send Me Some Lovin' (undubbed), It's Too Late (undubbed), Oh Boy, An Empty Cup (And A Broken Date), Rock Me My Baby, You've Got Love, Maybe Baby, Last Night, Send Me Some Lovin', It's Too Late, Tell Me How, Little Baby, (You're So Square) Baby I Don't Care, Look At Me, Mona (rehearsal), Mona (version 1), Mona (version 2), Mona (version 3), Rave On, That's My Desire (undubbed master), Well... Pretty well (on first glance) the same catalogue as the list I posted. Maybe some retakes or dupes. I'll need to find and compare with the originals ( as per my list, which I know is authentic). One thing for certain my friend - I doubt there's anything out there in addition to what we have already heard that will surface in the future. The Apartment Tapes are the end of the line !
That's probably as far as my musical insight into Buddy Holly goes. I'm not a massive fan of his music, but i won't deny he's one of the most important and influential musicians of all time.
A lot of people who would later become famous started off by copying Buddy Holly's guitar playing, including Keith Richards. Bob Dylan said seeing Buddy Holly was a life changing experience. But what would they know compared to some on here?
Noel Gallagher put together a compilation CD for Mojo Magazine, it was titled (and included) Well...All Right.
Bo Diddley showing the number of chords don't matter. Or the number of words. Forward it to 3.20. Also featuring Cookie V, a female exuding more sex appeal than the half-naked bombers gyrating about on stage nowadays.
my 6-cd box set is in the format of a large book, and does contain around 80 pages of biography and details about the tracks.
That all depends on the tuning of the guitar Castro, if you ever watch Keith Richards, Barry Gibb, and some others, they don't actually play chords. I think its called G tuning which enables guitarist to play most tunes by just moving one finger up and down the fret board. And with some older guitarist, Bo Diddley, and Chuck Berry included, and disregarding their fantastic riffs, they only used 6 bar and 12 bar fingering. I've never actually tried this G tuning lark as I mostly play a 12 string, which is hard enough to keep in tune, so altering all 12 strings to a different tuning type is not my idea of fun.
As big a fan that I am, I never realized he & the Crickets performed in Hull ! How the hell did I miss that ?
Peggy Sue was one of the first things I learnt, along with Wonderwall and Weller's, Wildwood. All very simple stuff, but they help you sound like can actually play guitar. The hard part is the songwriting itself, that's where the genius lies.
