I have come to accept that people go to football matches for all sorts of reasons, and that for many, supporting their team is pretty low down on the list. I also suspect at least 25% are watching a completely different game to the one unfolding on the pitch.
I do think that Jack adds an extra dimension to the team when we have 3 CBs as he often steps forward as the spare man and sets up attacks and is very comfortable in midfield.
I think it is the type of person you are. I am reasonably positive but can be grumpy. I have enough time being grumpy at home, no point being grumpy in my main outlet of energy/enjoyment. Some though see it as their release going to football.
Yep. At the Palace game, when Redmond was getting between their CBs, and pressing their keeper, this great walrus of a bloke bellowed out "You don't really mean it Redmond, you're just going through the motions!" - I bit my tongue.
I know how lucky we are to be surrounded by people we have become footie friends with over the last few years. No fools, no moaners. Able to share the joy when we win and the gallows humour when we don’t We have our disagreements. I’ve had to defend Maya at times, but it’s all grown up stuff Some people go to football to moan, don’t know why, they just do
Both Academy lads with unexotic images that spent their formative years playing in a lower division, they will never be good enough in some fan's eyes.
We had pretty much the same people all round us at St Marys through League One and the Championship, but that has gradually changed since our return to the PL. Pretty sure the fans who booed Puel, for example, weren't there when we were getting beat by Rochdale.
I'm now hopelessly lost. Let's get this right. The last time I looked going to football matches were on my list of "Things I Like To Do" along with live music, drama, films, etc. I went to see a tribute band last week. They were, well let's be kind, indifferent. There was a decent crowd in the place and we applauded their efforts politely. At no stage did anyone shout at the lead guitarist "Oi, you ****er. **** off, my ****ing mum could play better." Football matches are weird in that, unlike any other live entertainment, you can't quite know what you're going to get. I admit to not enjoying a 0-0 draw with Rochdale sandwiched in the middle of my 10 hour round trip. But that's life. But you're saying that people go to matches to scream abuse at "our players". Does not compute. Couldn't they just scream at their telly whenever Farage comes on? Oh, hang on ... Incidentally, I am a fan of Stephens. As someone said, he was in line for MOTM against Burnley. And as for Nathan Redmond. Ask any opposing fan what they think. There is a lot of agreement that he is terrifying at his best, and we are seeing an in-form player currently. My only concern is our ability to keep him. Meanwhile, back at the thread - narrow win for Saints that has us all praying for the final whistle. It's the Southampton way!
If we stay up, Redmond will want to stay and see what is possible with this guy when he strengthens the squad. I hope.
Took me a while to realise why it was a mystery. Slow or what? Went to the Dell in the 60's. Have only been back to the new ground recently. That's what comes of whole decades of your life disappearing. Any road up, Cardiff at home is a bad memory.
I think we all know in the deep deep darkness of our souls that Cardiff will score the last goal of the game with only a few minutes to go.....all we can hope for is that it isn't crucial and is just designed to turn us to drink.
I think one of them was behind me at Burnley. Either that or another random pillock shouting obscenities at all and sundry. Exercised my right to call him a prat and moved to a d***h**d free zone. Just love living in a world of ignorance and idiocy. Not
You've got to feel sorry for people like that. It's bad enough being an idiot, but to blurt it out and show yourself to be an idiot in front of several hundred fans in earshot has got to be the worst humiliation of all.
The hardest part of changing your mind is admitting that the beliefs you held true, were wrong, politics, religion, football, once a person has made up their mind about a subject, for example; a particular footballer not being good enough, the prism through which they view them, affects their perception of their contribution. I used to sit next to someone who absolutely HATED Pellè, we would often watch the same game, from the same vantage point and come away with totally opposing views on how he'd played. Having an opinion is fine, arguing that opinion with well a constructed and reasoned rationale is great. It is part of the rich tapestry that makes football debate so interesting, but shouting abuse or actively discouraging your own players, just means you're a dick.
We are going to get disappointments as well as unexpected delights............that to me has been Southampton football club for me over the years. It's a thing with Saints always seemingly doing the unexpected. I think that is why I have supported them for so long!! If they stay up great......if they go down tough. Either way, god willing I will be there to shout them on. I might criticise a player on here but never at the match. They need encouragement especially if they are having a bad game. Anyone that has played any sports will tell you we all have bad days............
This is very true and I always try to keep an open mind about all things Saints, for example Oriol has completely changed my opinion of him since he came back into the team under Ralph. I still don't want to see him as a CM pair with Mario as I think that their chemistry together is ineffectual but he is a very good screen in front of the defence and his distribution has been much improved as well. I'm still waiting for Mo El to persuade me that he is worth another season here yet though.
This is true, but also works the other way. People refusing to admit that a player is not very good when they hold them in high esteem
