We got some fantastic results under Hughton. Newcastle 6-0 Villa, Newcastle 5-1 Sunderland, Arsenal 0-1 Newcastle, Everton 0-1 Newcastle, West Ham 1-2 Newcastle but they were cancelled out by losing at home to Blackpool, Stoke, Blackburn and fighting back from 2-0 down against Wigan at home to draw 2-2. Losing away at West Brom did it for him. To be fair, we played some terrible stuff against the lesser teams.

This, when you look at it, we should have done so much better last season given the results against the bigger teams.

First year back up though. For most, only survival matters...

You forgot to mention the cup game at Chelsea. 2-4 was it, or 3-4? Either way Newcastle completely outplayed a pretty full strength Chelsea side. Only Lampard missing.

Aye, we won 4-3. Brilliant night that was, Chelsea equalised to make it 3-3 from 3-1 down and started singing 'That's why we're champions', we got the winner in the 90th minute and replied with the same song. We also had many reserve players playing that game.

I don't justify the Hughton sacking but there were unfortunately some reasons behind it. It continued under Pardew to be fair, the players mentality maybe was to blame but we finished 12th, would have been top 10 had we not thrown a 3 goal lead away on the last day to draw 3-3 with WBA. Delighted with that but I fear that's as far as we will go under this regime. No ambition.

    All of this, unfortunately.

I had confidence in Pardew last season when our aim was survival. Felt he had the ability to do that much for us.

Now our aim is a solid top 10 and hopefully further in the future, I really don't think Pardew is the right man for the job.

Really think he's done as much as he can do for us.

I was there that night... free ticket from my boss! So many goals I couldn't remember the score! I was at the same end as the Newcs, opposite corner. Do remember you giving it the 'that's why we're champions'... stumped the Chelsea boys until the full irony hit home. Both sets of fans in great voice that night.

Well we get to KC at 5:45, dump our stuff in the room near St Pancras and make our way over, hopefully get there a good hour before kick off with any luck.

I think Pardew is a slightly better manager but it was just such a shocking decision. Hughton was the best and most popular boss we'd had since Sir Bobby, and hadnt put a foot wrong. A true gentleman.

Pardew's certainly a more experienced manager Smudge, but despite also being a southerner, Hughton was becoming a proper Toon boss imo. Newcastle's one of those clubs that become key to the game from a spectator's point of view when they're on fire. Very entertaining when competing for the big stuff. Trouble is, the club's balances have to be right: right owners, manager, super no. 9, play-maker and keeper. The ground and backing from the fans are real assets.

For me, Hughton was a man of integrity who was well on the way to achieving those balances. Can't blame Ashley or Pardew I suppose for selling on that number 9 on this occasion. £35m's a lot of money. Can't believe Ashley failed to make at least £15m or £20m of that available for a fairly immediate replacement...

I was there when Sir Les made his return and was very proud at the reception he received both before and after the game particularly considering he scored the winner against us. After Dichio's 2 goals that day I thought we had the makings of a new hero.
