Rangers are to commemorate the 1961 Ibrox disaster at the Old Firm match on Sunday, September 18 which falls almost 50 years to the day that Tommy Thomson and George Nelson lost their lives.

The families of the 2 men will be special guest of honours that day and will lay wreathes at the John Greig statue before the game.

Both were caught up in a crush in the September 16th 1961 game between Rangers and Celtic which also saw another 50 people injured.

It has been said that the players will wear black armbands but the club has yet to confirm if there will be a minutes silence before the match.

    I didn't know about this.

That's tragic considering what happened 10 years later.

Pud - nothing came close though to the steep terracing opposite the main stand at Tannadice. It was worse than being in the Glasgow Apollo.

Remember once being in there and th place was packed and we were all doing the pogo to try and keep warm.

That place was exhilerating but dangerous as hell.

    Happy Days.

You do miss the atmoshphere of those days but I wouldn't swap it for the safety we now get!

I'm amazed that there weren't more Ibrox/Hillsborough/Bradford type incidents ... fans were treated like ****e in poor facilities!

  12. I liked that terracing cos I was a boy when I was last on it and the big steps meant I could see.

The away ends at Brockville and Douglas Park were disasters waiting to happen.

Was at Brockville when we were losing 4-2 with ten minutes left and won 5-4.

No idea how everyone survived it.

I didn't know about the above incident - I thought Ibrox only had two disasters (02 and 71)

Young men going to watch a game of football and not coming home - sad.

It's shocking isn't it. I've read a bit about the 71 disaster. Watched the programme on BBC too and it was so sad to hear the old woman talking about her wee 13 year old going out with his mates to watch his team and never coming back.

Some of the details about peopel dying are quite horrific and I'm sure if more people knew about it, they wouldn't take the piss
