I thought it was, dunno maybe it's been sold off to some ****ehouse mega brewery. A decent ale down here is Betty Stoggs, but I have to admit to not really being much of an ale man. Although there's a few good little micro breweries that do some really good Pale ales and IPAs, which I'm really fond of.
IMHO it’s one of the better ales in a can. I struggle to drink Old Speckled Hen and the like as they have a nasty after taste. Occasionally buy bottles but think they’re massively overpriced for the marginal upgrade in taste.
I've not had ale from a can for a long time. I prefer it out of bottle, but have swung towards craft brews and quality lagers of late. Definitely agree that ale suits coming straight out of the barrel. Adnams ales are decent out of the bottle, as are Bath ales. Supermarkets generally have 3 for a fiver deals on bottle ale so not that expensive.
Still exists as a brewery in Cornwall but was bought by Molson/Coors, who churn out the Doom Bar from wherever.
Spent the morning with the old dear, now gonna go drop off the boy before heading home to watch the footy n get ready for first day tomorrow.
Nice one mate, you looking forward to it? Are you staying within the NHS area or are you doing something completely new fella?
Yeah looking forward to getting started again, I work best when challenged so suits me having a lot of learning/training etc to do. And yeah still in NHS mate but quite a bit different to what I was doing and opens up a lot if different avenues too so it's nice to have options.
Hope it goes well mate, no more shifts! and sounds like a cracking opportunity for you to progress, chuffed for you.
Good luck Libs, don’t turn up hungover on your first day. Save that for your second day. I know you’re on the wagon.
Thanks mate and yeah the no more shifts is ****ing brilliant, can't even put into words how much my mood/MH has improved in the 7/8 weeks or so I've been off them.
I get that, my daughter was a cardiac nurse until a year or so back and the shifts used to absolutely knock her for 6. 2 or 3 nights, followed by a day off, then a day on call, then 2 12 hour days etc etc etc. Since she jibbed it she’s a different person, has time to sort out a proper diet, go the gym, and most importantly rest properly. She used to suffer with insomnia, not anymore.
My old man worked night shifts for 30 years in his job. Not saying that is responsible for his Dementia now, but I don't think it helped.
I don’t think it’s quite as bad if it’s permanent night shift, albeit it takes a certain type to put up with it, as it’s hardly conducive to a ‘normal’ life. But nights as part of roster ****s people up in my experience. I have admiration for anyone who does it, especially as the majority are in the caring and public safety area, so are hardly getting rich off it!
He did shift patterns, so he'd do 4 nights, 4 days then 3 days off. I swear it ****ed with his brain long term, the lack of sleep. Trying to sleep in the day when we were kids and naturally being noisy etc.
Can’t have been great for his quality of life mate. There’s been studies into night workers mental and physical health and it’s been medically linked from everything from diabetes to cancer.
Yep, it wouldn't surprise me at all if it's contributed to his Dementia. Also he was working for a big Pharma company making all sorts of drugs and meds. This is back in the 70's and 80's when H&S was pretty lax. He'd tell me stories of mixing up big barrels of toxic materials and breathing in ****e fumes/dust/powders etc. He was also a heavy smoker back then 40 a day. Perfect storm really.
