See, I don't think they are, not any more. Once upon a time, perhaps they were, but certainly not for a long time now. Chelsea have probably been your most consistent rivals in recent times, and now it looks as though City are going to be the team that you'll be chasing. Liverpool ceased to be your rivals a long, long time ago, and you only feed the arrogance of their fans by insisting that they are your main rivals. I used to like Liverpool, but that ended back in the 90s. Now, they are my most hated EPL club. It's not so much the club itself, but more the fans. They genuinely believe that they have a god-given right to finish in the top 4 every season, despite the fact that they are now a very average club. Sure, they've bought some players for an incredibly amount of money, but they haven't bought the likes of Messi, Xavi, or even Nasri. No, they've bought Carroll and Henderson and Downing, all for stupid money. So, please, stop bigging-up LFC by continuing to insist that they remain your rivals.
There is a lot more to being main rivals than league position. If it was just about league positions, then Spurs fans couldn't really consider Arsenal as a main rival, given that they have consistently outperformed you and haven't finished below you since 1995. Liverpool, City and Leeds will always be Man United's greatest rivals, the teams we want to beat most, regardless of league position. Although I accept that games against Chelsea and Arsenal are still big matches as those are the clubs that have been pushing us hardest in terms of league position.
The gulf in class in has rarely been as great between us and Arsenal as it has been between United and 'Pool, especially in recent times. We have finished just behind Arsenal the last two seasons, and not so long ago would have finished above them (but for an infamous case of food-poisoning during the last game of that particular season). This season, of course, Arsenal are probably at their weakest ever ebb. United, on the other hand, have been consistently there or thereabouts, whereas LFC has been on a spiral of decline for many, many seasons. Sure, from a historical perspective, LFC was your main rival club for many seasons, but that certainly has not been the case for a long, long time. United fans do themselves and their club a great disservice by insisting that 'Pool is their main rival. Your main rival now, and for many years to come, is City. Our main rival is, and always has been, Arsenal. LFC's main rival now is probably Bolton, or Everton.
Yeah, I know that 'Pool fans will big themselves up by claiming that United fans see LFC as their club's main rival, because that makes them feel like they are still a main player in world football. But that doesn't mean that, in fact, LFC is the main rival of United. Clearly, they are not, as I have pointed out.

I have little doubt that that is what you believe, but it doesn't make it true. You will now discover that United v City will become the most widely anticipated fixture on the planet. And it will stay that way even when City and their bottomless pit of money become the first team to win the quadruple.

Why on earth would United fans want to big-up LFC by claiming that they are their main rivals, on a thread that is all about hate? Well, I know a lot of United fans (two of whom are long-term season ticket holders), with whom I often discuss a lot of football , and not one of them sees LFC as United's main rival. And all of them agree with me that City are now United's main rival.
