Aye see what Donald has to say about it he always talks sense. Disagreements over prices aside we did really need a quality striker and it looks like they've delivered, their first choice no less.
Eaves would have been a big risk. 2 years ago he scored 2 goals in 40 games for Yeovil and moved to Gillingham for free. Hes 27 now aswell, and hes only just learnt how to score goals
And the Spurs lad could well be exciting up front too. Buzzing about the squad and team again, reckon Jack has what he needs now, bring it on!
He has been the clubs first choice though from day one, and although I agree with you about Eaves to some extent, the deals we have done should see us back in the Championship, if we get there in one go, the money will have been well spent, we needed to get a goal scorer in, having lost Maja, he had to be replaced, and it looks like we've done it. Hats off to Donald
Very fair comment. He's scored something like 31 in 66 for us, but look at all the clubs previous, virtually nothing. He's a very clinical striker and without doubt his 6.5 frame is his advantage, but...i've never seen him like previous players that i felt were quality, namely Dack (Blackburn) and Gazzaniga (Spurs) - unlike them, I'm not convinced he would make the step up, especially at a bigger club, where he might not get such a free role. Not many strikers turn defenders. Yet we are near the bottom of the table for a reason, his free role makes up for the failings of others, if he was in a more organised team, would he be knocking them in so freely, I'm not convinced, certainly not for any decent price tag.
Paul Kendrick (some Wigan bloke) says he knows a lot about Grigg deal and that the fee is nowhere near what’s being reported. He’s a Wigan bod and he was the first to report the £4m amount seemingly.
I recall from the days when I was doing exams that the Economics paper regularly asked for definitions of value. What is something worth. While there were standard (long winded) answers, if you were pushed for time - AS MUCH AS SOMEONE WILL PAY got you by along with a couple of sentences about Supply and Demand. Wigan had us over a barrel and everyone, even us Fans, knew it. They have screwed us for what they could get. Meanwhile we have a striker who SHOULD continue the goals at a similar rate to the departed Maja. And if it's that that gets us up, it will have been a bargain.
Grigg will pay for his own transfer fee after he shoots us to Wembley and promotion. People were whinging that they wanted to see Donalds money and now they have theyve found something else to moan about. It must be hard work being in charge of our football club.
From SSN..... WILL HE? WON'T HE? Sunderland had finally agreed a deal with Wigan for Will Grigg last night after a sixth bid was accepted, reportedly of £4m. However, there’s been no confirmation yet from either club yet. We believe they are waiting for the EFL to ratify the deal.
I know that and if he can get us up then great. I'm just aware of how tight our finances are and paying four times the value of a player is quite a lot. Not my money though and if that's what Donald was happy to pay then I'd like to shake his hand and thank him for it.
I said a couple of days ago that I'd prefer to see our youth team promoted than overspend because they knew we were desperate. I've just heard so much about having to stay within budget, that we still need to be careful etc etc..... Having said that, I'm bloody happy that we've got someone in. Our squad is a hell of a lot stronger now.
