Sky. Did you see Horizon last night, the title of which was "Are You Good or Evil?". The general premise was that scientists reckon they've isolated a gene for evil, which is triggered by your upbringing. It was littered with forensic psychiatrists and scientists of various hues. They did brain scans of various psychopaths and serial killers. There was a scientist on there who had this gene. His family found him to be short-tempered and strange on occasion, but never violent. However, he had a model and caring upbringing, so the gene had not been triggered. After all the years and the research, it just sounds like 'Nature and Nurture' to me. Your views?
Yeah I watched it Very interesting program. The morale molecule is something that's been going around for a while now but yeah I agree the whole argument is just another 'nature vs nurture'. The fact that the guy at the end had all the genetic makeup to be a serial killer yet is a successful family man (with a temper!) is very interesting and offers good supporting evidence. Further CAT scans etc should be done on various 'normal' people to see how common this brain and genetic combination is, without causing a violent disposition. Very interesting stuff - but yeah totally agree that at the moment it clearly seems to be 'nature vs nurture'.
Glad a professional psycho-carer agrees with a mere molecular biologist. I wouldn't have wanted to be the one doing the scan on the serial killer. As a novice in this area, it seems so obvious to me that any individual's mental makeup is a combination of both nature and nature. That's why my daughters are both so beautiful, intelligent and well-balanced. Just like their Dad
I often run the 'Hare Psychopathy Checklist-Revised' (PCL-R) on many of our high-risk offenders, it is basically a diagnostic tool used to rate a person's psychopathic or antisocial tendencies. It includes looking for psychopathic traits such as charm, deceit, violence or other methods that allow them to get away with what they want. It also looks at symptoms of psychopathy that include: lack of a conscience or sense of guilt, lack of empathy, egocentricity, pathological lying, repeated violations of social norms, disregard for the law, shallow emotions, and a history of victimising others. It's a handy little test to see what peoples tendencies are without actually taking blood and looking for 'morale molecules' or doing brain scans etc. You probably heard it mentioned briefly on the show last night.
Not sure to be honest. Just getting worried as I have only received 1 private message off him today. I'll accept the bad news and hope for the best.
