I think he might just not be bothered about the domestic Cups. When he was in charge of Saints we were sat in 8th in the PL and had a 5th round (may have been quarters) cup game against Sunderland and he put out a half strength team. We basically had nothing to play for that year as from memory there was a big gap between us and 7th and us and 9th.
Was simple misunderstanding due to language inflection ... what he actually said was: "We are going to create a debate that to win a trophy is going to help the club," he said. “I don’t agree with that. we have to build with lego; like the stadium. In reality the most important thing is being consistently in the top four and dining with crusty bread and Champions cheese. That is going to help the club to achieve the best door step."
If that is true then it is that single-minded arrogance and almost disrespect of the fans wishes that I dislike about him, like when he refused to speak English when he was probably more comprehesible speaking it than Puel for instance and then turned up at Spuds speaking it.
Good points - unfortunately he is employed by businessmen rather than fans - winning the FA Cup is worth about £6 million - qualifying for the Champions League apparently around £70 million .. For me the bigger question for all clubs is why league position and winning cups are now considered mutually exclusive? ... a consistent winning team with changes only being made if genuine injuries are picked up seems by far the most intelligent approach to me and conceivably would allow the biggest clubs to achieve both ... .. lose your fans and you are on a downward spiral of discontent ... we are like that with Puel at the moment - yet the bloke isn't doing a bad job in fairness
As has already been mentioned, Arsene Wenger already had 3 league titles and 4 FA Cups under his belt when he made the statement about the top 4. Poch has won **** all. And I would argue Poch's statement is worse, as Wenger merely stated that Top four finishes are more important than trophies, but Poch is stating that trophies are detrimental to a team, because of "ego" "Nah we dont want to win trophies, because it might hurt our chances of not winning trophies". He does realise that the whole point and end aim of football teams is to WIN trophies, right?! please log in to view this image
Exactly.. You ****ers know nowt, he was actually talking about Manchego, that Spanish cheese. It's award winning, so Pooch is gonna buy some out of his own pocket, and claim Spurs have an award. #manchego
I think he meant if players win trophies on a regular basis their wages will go up and become prima-donnas. This would be tantamount to putting a garlic necklace around Dracula’s neck. With the club cash strapped and having to refinance the excessive new stadium costs Levy would have a throb if they actually won something.
Winning that first trophy is always the bottle neck. Once the players do that, and taste that bit of success, it makes them hungrier for more and makes them play better. Its also a signal of intent to everyone else that you have entered the running. Our Carling cup win in 2005 did this for us, and City's FA Cup win in 2011 did it for them. Yes there is always the danger that your club could spend beyond its means and end up in trouble trying to replicate that success, ala Portsmouth but Tottenham are a little bit bigger than Portsmouth, and I am sure Levy can manager the clubs finances better than Milan Mandaric. If its just a case of "Well i want to stay **** so our good players dont leave!" then.......... please log in to view this image
I love Poch for what he's come out and said. As per usual, the wumsters have gleefully jumped on him with misinterpretations. What Poch is saying is that simply winning a domestic cup (as have the likes of Wigan, Portsmouth and Birmingham FFS) is not going to build the club into a side capable of winning the title, whereas maintaining a presence in the top 4 could.
No what he's saying is, that since your glory day in black and white, the likes of wigan, pompey and brum have won a cup. but he loves manchego
