I have never been sure which camp I was in between' top 4' or 'trophy'. I have now decided top 4 . Football IS all about business and money.( I hate that BUT that is a fact ) Of course I would love to win a trophy but looking at the list of past winners of either of the domestic trophies, it is dominated by top clubs. It used to be top 4, we are fortunate to have broken into the group of top 6. We have to stay there or we get left behind. The only way to stay there is to get enough money to continuously stay strong. And top 4 and CL football earns more than a cup run or even winning the thing. Once we are secure in that position , then maybe our squad will be big enough to go all the way in a cup.
It is the only position of the realist. In a few years, I hope that our position in a 'Big 6' is secure enough that we can look at a season where we might finish 6th and win the Carabao Cup as a success. Right now, it wouldn't be.
Why is finishing 6th and a Carabao cup success in the future but not now? When is finishing 6th ever a success with a squad finishing in 3,2,3...3 semi finals, 1 final. 6th will not be successful unless you're used to finishing 7th and below
Despite him having said the exact opposite in numerous interviews over several seasons when we've still been in domestic cup competitions? Okay.....I guess, never let the truth get in the way of your point of view? https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/f...Tottenham-Carabao-Cup-Pochettino-insists.html
Was being sarcastic and poking a bit of fun at Arsenal/Chelsea's recent finishes out of the top 4, having won a cup but missed out on CL qualification.
There seems to be a huge divide in our fanbase at the moment, not just on here but gauging social media and word of mouth in general. There are those who are seemingly sick of Levy/ ENIC, believing they're bad for the club. And those who are refusing to admit we're in a bit of trouble and just thinking that the future will be automatically perfect. Everyone's always entitled to an opinion, it's the beauty of debate but I personally find myself in-between both sides. I like Levy, he's helped progressed this club better than any other chairman has done with theirs (excluding Russian/ Sheikh money). As a businessman he can't be faulted but as a football-man, he has his faults. Do I want him gone? Absolutely not. Do I want him to slightly adjust some of his ways for the benefit of the team? Yes. Then with regards to the future, yes it does look pretty bright and once we're in the new stadium that should create a new aura around the place which is currently shocking what with Wembley and the failure to strengthen the side in the summer which pissed a lot (myself included) of people off. I feel like too many are focused on what might be yet neglecting what currently is. To reach "what might be" we have to ensure that the here and now is in a good position. On the face of it we are, despite some weaknesses and injuries there's a great bunch of players here but looking forward to just a few months and massive problems could arise as a result of not improving in the summer/ now. Another good but unspectacular season could see more players wanting to do a "Kyle Walker". It'd be a surprise to everyone if Toby is still here beyond the summer, whilst the question mark over Eriksen is getting bigger by the day. That's two pivotal players to this team and two who've greatly contributed to us going from CL hopefuls to CL regulars. If/ when we lose Toby for £25m, there's no way we'll get a better defender for the same price, no way, I'd bank my flat on it. If we do also lose Eriksen in the summer, sure we'd get a huge windfall but then who do you get to replace Eriksen that's not already at a better club than Tottenham? You could try doing a Liverpool after they sold Coutinho but Eriksen is far more important to Tottenham than what Coutinho ever was to Pool. For me we need to make sure our team is still good enough going into the new ground because otherwise the bright future will take a lot longer to reach and this somewhat golden generation of players we have will be known has "what might have beens" when it comes to looking back 20 years from now. FWIW, I'm fully aware we can't go out and spend £150m this window on three fantastic players, though we don't necessarily need too, to many feel we can't improve the XI and that may be correct (apart from CM) but we can most certainly improve the quality of the squad and that doesn't require ridiculous amounts of money, for instance we don't need to spend £50m on a squad option. I don't know how much money we have, although we have been led to believe that there is/ was money to spend. All I know, or perhaps all I feel I should say, is that we have three days to try and save our season as well as trying to convince our key players that we are still the place to be come next season. So in short, whilst there's "Levy Out" types and "Everything will be fine" types, I guess I'd say "I'm Levy in but want Levy to be a bit more ambitious for the team not just ambitious for club's stature. I'm happy with the team but fear that without proper strengthening, the happiness with this team will fade once we start seeing key players wanting out because they feel we've hit our ceiling" type.
And unlike football players and/or their supporters, it cannot be bought or sold. < you either have it or you don't >
Levy deserves the chance to show us he's right and we were just a Stadium away from moving up a level...let's see if that happens or we are just like Arsenal. You was extremely hopeful of the summer being an extravaganza of signings because you felt it was important for where we are...then you shifted it to January...that's almost gone and now you've got me chasing your cost tail all the way to the summer you silver tongued Cockrel
The reason why I was so certain about summer strengthening was because partly of what's happening now with injuries as we overuse the same players and thus I wanted better depth (along with a shiny new CM) and partly because we were/ are so close from being that next level side yet also so close from being dismantled, and so not strengthening further boosts the chances of being dismantled rather than reaching the next level. Frustrating as **** because to most it was obvious we were just one/ two/ maybe three players away from doing what Pool are currently doing in terms of giving the title a real good go yet we're likely left with another season of "what if". I still think we're going in the right direction but we've just seemingly chosen to take a longer route.
That's understandable thinking mate I have felt the same things for the same reasons. I'm just lacking the faith that you have in it all coming together perfectly in the future...I do fear that we may miss an opportunity if we don't improve the here and now. I reckon a part of you feels that too.
I have the exact same fears, mate. I really was so sure we'd strengthen in the summer. Because we didn't, I'm not as optimistic for the "perfect future" as I was once was but Poch and Levy generally do right by the club so I feel I owe it to them to keep some faith, though the window of opportunity definitely seems to be getting smaller in my eyes.
I've got no problems with what Levy has done for us...and it's a difficult emotion to deal with when you have a problem with someone who has delivered so much. However the next level...that's the end game and it's falling on Levy's watch...Levy took over because other owners couldn't take us up the ladder...that same scrutiny will fall on Levy if he can't take us to our next natural step of progression.
