Swansea City v Gillingham Competition - FA Cup, Round 4 Date - 26 January 2019 Kick off - 3pm Venue - Liberty Stadium Following their hard fought and ultimately deserved victory in the Championship over 3rd placed Sheffield United, next up for Graham Potter and his squad is a home FA Cup match against Gillingham of League One. Against Sheffield United, the Blades started strongly but failed to take their chances in a goalless first half at the Liberty Stadium. Swansea made them pay with a second-half transformation which led to Oli McBurnie's well-worked winning goal. The Swans could have been out of sight soon afterwards but were thwarted by a flurry of brilliant saves by Dean Henderson in the Sheffield goal. Nevertheless, victory lifted the Swans up to ninth in the Championship, six points adrift of the play-off positions. On the same day that the Swans were beating the Blades, Gillingham slumped to a disappointing 0-3 home defeat at the hands of Walsall. Andy Cook scored his first Football League hat-trick as Walsall ended a run of six games without a win by convincingly beating Gillingham at the Priestfield Stadium. Cook set the Saddlers on their way to a first away league win since 6 October when he headed past Gills goalkeeper Tomas Holy from Luke Leahy's free-kick after nine minutes. The former Barrow and Tranmere striker doubled Walsall's advantage with another header 10 minutes later following good work out wide by former Gills midfielder Matt Jarvis. He then poked the ball past Holy from Leahy's long throw to complete his hat-trick 90 seconds after the break. A week away from an FA Cup fourth-round tie at Swansea, Regan Charles-Cook's tame curling effort was Gillingham's only shot on target as Steve Lovell's side fell to a fourth league defeat in seven games. Swansea born Lovell must be hoping that his team performs much better when they play the Swans. In the third round, Elliott List scored the late winner as The Gills caused the shock of the round by beating Cardiff.... Ahead of the draw Lovell, who as well as being born in Swansea also had a loan spell with the Swans in 1987, said a fourth round tie against the Championship club would be "brilliant." "I'd love to go back to Swansea and play against them," he said. "I've spoken to my mum and my sister and they would love that to happen. "Swansea is where I went to school and grew up and I have fond memories. "My dad used to take me down to the old Vetch field when I was a kid and that was my first taste of professional football. "To go to Swansea and play them would be fantastic." The Swans and the Gills have met on 38 occasions previously, with the Swans winning 15, losing 13 and 10 draws. Included in that list are 3 FA Cup matches - the Swans winning all 3. Assuming that Potter selects a strong team, I would expect the Swans to win 3-1.
Potter needs to keep our winning run going so that means he must pick our strongest team. So it should be the same team that started yesterday with the only changes being Rodon out injured so CV to stand in for him and if Routs is out then James to replace. If he goes that way then I see us winning not easily as they will be up for it so a tense win 3-0. Now if we don’t treat them with the respect they deserve with a weekend team or turning up as billy big bollox then an upset is possible. As them up the road, don’t want to go the same way as the Capital team.
We should win this but we know full well that these one off games are different to both teams normal league matches....A strong side is needed and we must treat them with respect as if we were playing a championship side imv.....2 -0
We have our next league game on the following Tuesday so I wouldn't be surprised to see quite a few changes but then again I wouldn't be surprised to see no changes
There’s money to be won in the cup, so a strong side should see a 2-0 win. Just avoid that banana skin!
The fact that Potter put out a strong team in the last round suggests that the Cup hasn't been consigned to the scrapheap this season. But managers have a habit of rolling out 'I've selected a team that's strong enough to win the game'. I suspect we will field a strong team but not the strongest possible team. 2-1 Swans.
I guess we'll have to wait and see what team is put out seeing as we've got a league fixture on Tuesday. Not sure what to make of it as we're actually in nibbling distance of a play off place, so that may very well influence any possible cup run now. We really should win this game but how many times have I said that please log in to view this image
Hi Lads, So my boys eventually get chance to visit your place. Sadly i will not be there tomorrow, a lot of money to come and watch my team get pumped, other things in life had to take priority on this occasion, despite being asked to come along. Steve Lovell our manager wanted this draw being a Swansea lad himself, born and bred. So if the team don't get motivated for the guvnor then they never will, I think it will only be that type of passion that will see us with any glimmer of a chance at your place. We have been like marmite this season, if we play the top sides (with the exception of Sunderland) we seem to win and with the rest we lose. At the moment we are staring relegation in the face, but it's there every season as we don't have any money to spend on players, only sell. Eaves our top striker, if on form, could be a threat. One that might not play but he would certainly be in my selection if you want to add pace to our game is Regan Charles-Cook certainly one for the future. Other than that Elliott List has found form and was the undoing of Cardiff... https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/av/football/46769997 You will see both Eaves & List undo Cardiff in that short video ^^^ Of course being a lower league supporter we like to dream and would love us to win, we just missed out on West Ham who came out the draw just after us in this round, just up the road from us, would love another opportunity to get them, but i expect we will be coming home with our tails between our legs. Last time we had a big game away was Spurs also in the Cup and we got pumped 5-0, but hey those travelling as always will have a fun day and be vocal throughout, whatever the result.
Thanks for the post ,but there's no need to big us up , you may find the game tomorrow easier than you first thought. No excuses but it seems there's a few of our regular ( recent that is ) 1st team are unavailable due to injury, our defence will be changed and I expect that includes the keeper , which probably means Grimes will slot into the LB positions and last weeks LB moved over to RB, Routledge is out Naughton out, Rodon out although his replacement is decent enough (and a bloody great lump), Dyer has bug ,we also have league game on Tuesday , so does Potter look at this with an eye on Tuesday thinking put the kids out .Either way I'm looking forward to it , a Cup game what's not to like
Chance to get some money to fund Bony's wages for a bit! The English Football League have revealed that the club from its three divisions to progress the furthest in this season's FA Cup will scoop £250,000 each. Swansea City booked their place in the fourth round of the 2018/19 competition with an emphatic 3-0 win over Aston Villa earlier this month. The winner of the match between the Swans and the Gills at the Liberty Stadium will guarantee themselves £180,000 in FA prize money. Teams left in round four Championship Bolton Wanderers, Brentford, Bristol City, Derby County, Middlesbrough, Millwall, Queens Park Rangers, Sheffield United, Swansea City & West Brom.
11 players V 11 Players. You cant get anything fairer than that......Football is all on the day in games like this and as we have home advantage i will go for the win..... A bit of good news for gills is home games are not that much of an advantage to us....
With the run in the FA Cup comes the disadvantage. Our league game, supposed to have been played today, has been rearranged for 3 days later. So whilst our league opposition Birmingham have a 10 day break before they play us, we have two hard games sandwiched together in the space of a few days.
