With what I have seen, you are a decent guitarist mate, never compare yourself to anyone, just be you.. Mick Ronson used to always say that..<ok>

Anyway, this guy was the best...

    True.

But all were influenced heavily by those who went before. It’s the way you develop your own style by pinching bits from all your influences and using them to create your personal style.

Listen to my old mate, Peter Green. As BB King said, “He’s the only one who gave me the cold sweats”

My wife who is a dispenser in a pharmacy has to dish out the methadone to the local addicts. Two things that she mentions is that most of the addicts come from very middle class families (including an addict whose both parents are doctors) and the fact that they have to show you that they have swallowed the methodone. Apparently they used to pretend to take and then spit it back into a bottle to sell!!

The band I play in is a proper eclectic mix of Funk, Latin, Soul, Afrobeat, Jazz. That comes from having lots of different personalities in the band who've all played in different bands over the years and who all bring their own influences to this one.

Best way to learn mate. Listen to as much as you can. Take what you like, or what you think you can adapt, and weave it into your own play.

I’m still listening now, even after over 40 years of playing. I hear a riff I like, I try to use it somewhere in what I play.

You never stop learning in music.

  11. I’ve posted links to plenty of my own stuff.

And to be fair, I do improvise a fair amount of my soloing on stage. Not many guitatarists out there on the semi pro circuit have the balls to do that.

Yep true that. I've had the chance like yourself to play with a few 'proper' musicians too. Our Keyboard player was in an Indie band of some repute in the 80/90's who were a favourite of John Peel's. One of our Sax players brother in law plays Keys in The Squeeze and was also the musical director for Dido's tour a few years ago, so he comes and jams with us now and again. And I've also played a gig with one of Van Morrison's drummers at a mate's birthday (he's a friend of his)

Those guys, who've been there, done it and got the T shirt always have some pearls of wisdom to impart. <ok>

Just keep doing what you do mate and enjoy. I do think that all the great guitarists are our age, it was our era and good to see you continuing that..<ok>

I don't take sides on this forum, I say and do as I wish..

I disagree with that HIAG, most semi pro musicians constantly have to improvise. Whether it's ability, ocassion or just old fashioned forgetfulness, it happens. It's one of the reason, I like watching live bands, it's a different show every time!

Yep this <ok> Part of the whole idea of playing live is that you can go off piste and try new things, sometimes by mistake and sometimes by design. For me that makes a live show. Otherwise I'd just stay at home and listen to a record.

  20. No, they don't .

Or, if they do, they do it very simply or very badly.

To improvise properly and effectively takes expert knowledge of the fretboard and music theory.

I'm not talking about simple blues improvisation , here .
