Young football hopeful killed friend after Buckfast binge



A PROMISING young footballer faces a life sentence for the Hallowe'en murder of his friend.

Paul Renton, 16, was yesterday convicted of stabbing 15-year-old Peter McAuley to death.

Renton was nicknamed ''Mo'' after his hero Mo Johnston, the former Celtic, Rangers and Scotland football star.

The trial judge Lord McCluskey could not sentence Renton yesterday because there were no background reports.

He told the jury: ''I will have no alternative but to order him to be detained for life next month.

''I have to see reports to enable me to make a recommendation as to when he can apply to the parole board for release.''

A jury unanimously found Renton guilty of a senseless, frenzied stabbing while fuelled with Buckfast fortified wine.

The High Court in Glasgow heard how Renton and his victim had drunk nine bottles of Buckfast along with another boy.

Renton, of Langside Avenue, Viewpark, Uddingston, Lanarkshire, was ''fighting mad'' and had attacked other boys earlier because they laughed at his drunken state.

Ironically McAuley, of Merrick Terrace, Viewpark, - described in court as a ''quiet boy'' - acted as a peacemaker and broke up the fight. Later, however, he made the fatal mistake of laughing at Renton.

Joseph Rundell, 17, of Main Street, Bothwell, told how he looked out a window of a flat in Bute Terrace, Viewpark, and saw Renton and McAuley.

He told Mr John Morris QC, prosecuting: ''Peter laughed and it put Mo in a bad mood and they began to fight.''

Seconds later McAuley lay dying, a stab wound through his heart and 14 others to his back.

Another youth saw Renton with a knife and chased him through back gardens and told his step-father: ''He's stabbed Peter.''

Renton did not give evidence in court, but claimed he acted in self-defence on October 31, l997.

His counsel, Mr Gordon Jackson QC, told the jury that medical evidence showed that McAuley could have been stabbed accidentally while he and Renton rolled around on the ground.

Mr Jackson asked the jury to find Renton guilty of the lesser charge of culpable homicide.

After the jury's verdict, defence advocate Miss Rosemary Guinnane told the court: ''Tragically there is nothing I can say to mitigate the offence.''

She said Renton had refused to co-operate for background reports and Lord McCluskey said he would sentence Renton to be detained for life on March 11.

A family friend of Renton said later: ''Mo was born with a gift for football and would no doubt have played as a professional. He might even had played for Scotland, but now that dream is finished.''

Another friend said: ''Another two young lives have been ruined because of Buckfast wine.''

After public concern over the sale of the wine to youngsters in Lanarkshire, MP Helen Liddell travelled to Buckfast Abbey where the monks make #60m profit each year from its sale. The monks refused to see her.
