Are you implying that the British electorate are too thick to understand these things? Oh dear. And anyway, Remain was the clear winner against all comers.
It's not a question of being thick. More about whether they have focused on educating themselves on complex subjects and evaluations surely?
Your inference and my implication may be entirely different. Then again... Edit: Irrespective as to people's level of understanding or intelligence (two separate things!) I do think it's a bad polling question. Pitting something so specific against something so general is odd imo.
Which is precisely why it should be left to politicians, and why I don’t want a second referendum. Our problem is the politicians.
100% agree with that. And I'm far from convinced anyone could come up with suitable questions in a second referendum that would satisfy Brexiters, so it would be a running sore and an inconclusive result (there might even be a Leave campaign to abstain from the vote which again, would render it useless). May is seeking a comprise with the other parties. I simply don't think there is one, not without outside help. She's hoping that the closer we get to 29 March, the greater the pressure, not only on Parliament, but also on the EU to help her get her deal through. That's her best chance, if Ireland can be persuaded to put an end date on the back stop in return for other assurances etc then the deal would probably scrape through Parliament.
Excerpt from David Cameron speech prior to the real peoples' vote. 'You will have to judge what is best for you and your family, for your children and grandchildren, for our country, for our future. It will be your decision whether to remain in the EU on the basis of the reforms we secure, or whether we leave. Your decision. Nobody else’s. Not politicians’. Not Parliament’s. Not lobby groups’. Not mine. Just you. You, the British people, will decide. At that moment, you will hold this country’s destiny in your hands. This is a huge decision for our country, perhaps the biggest we will make in our lifetimes. And it will be the final decision. So to those who suggest that a decision in the referendum to leave… …would merely produce another stronger renegotiation and then a second referendum in which Britain would stay… …I say think again. The renegotiation is happening right now. And the referendum that follows will be a once in a generation choice. An in or out referendum. When the British people speak, their voice will be respected – not ignored. If we vote to leave, then we will leave. There will not be another renegotiation and another referendum. So I say to my European counterparts with whom I am negotiating. This is our only chance to get this right – for Britain and for the whole European Union. I say to those who are thinking about voting to leave. Think very carefully, because this choice cannot be undone. And to those who are campaigning to leave but actually hoping for a second referendum – I say decide what you believe in. If you think we should leave – and leave means leave – then campaign for that and vote for it. But if you are actually arguing for a better relationship between Britain and the European Union, then don’t campaign to get out.'
So gossip today is that May has spoken to Merkel and Dutch leader. She will be having a call with Junker later. I listened to the Brexit mob tories who seem confident that she won't turn on them or let the vote down. I have lost a lot of trust in politicians tbh. 17.4M voted leave and 200 politicians want to reverse the result. I still have the faith that this great democracy of ours won't turn us into a banana republic to satisfy a few upset losers.
Last weeks rejection of May's deal must have strengthened her hand in talks with the EU. When a deal goes down that badly, the EU can hardly call it a tactical vote by Parliament. The ball surely in the EU's court to do something about the backstop.
Yep, our problem is the politicians. If he had deigned to hang around for more than five minutes he could have implemented what he promised as he stated it here. But he flounced off and left it to a bunch of even bigger ****wits. And even as a Remainer I think it would have been better for us to go for a definitive proper Brexit from day one rather than living in this fantasy land that we have wasted two and a half years on.
No. You have a touch of the 'Operation Hope and Desperation' I'd go and book an appointment with your GP.
I heard something similar. Many people would abstain which they then couldn't accept? Well you never know with this lot in the House? All this rubbish about a second vote is just an excuse to try and stop us leaving. Portillo was superb last night calling it "groundhog day". His response to the remoaner was fab. Personally I think they can't/won't have another go because we were all told it would be implemented. You can't now go back on that due to a few muppets not wanting it in the House. Although saying that, if it was fair, I would like to shut those remaoners up once and for all. It won't but if it ever happened: Let's just say the vote will be the same as before Leave/Remain no changes with age or the other tricks like splitting the vote.. Leave would win by a much bigger margin as so many remainers would side with leave due to the stitch up. However saying all that we have done that. It's just losers trying to change things.
It's never been adopted because the party in power at the time with 36-40% of the total vote has benefited from first past the post and has never seen the national interest in giving up that advantage. As for the second point since when has that ever been a problem? You're not suggesting that the electorate is too stupid to be trusted to make a decision
It's 2019 now. So far as I am aware the clocks did not stop then. At some point there will be another election or referendum if only because time has run out.
Yes Mate, why would Germany go over the heads of the EU to want us to stay? I thought they did everything together as a 27? Truth is that so far they have held the best hand but now they are on the back foot and will have to adapt or countries will start rebelling. https://www.express.co.uk/news/poli...ean-union-budget-brussels-britain-eu-payments The EU are becoming more unpopular by the day and are clapping down on states that want a say. https://www.express.co.uk/news/worl...rious-rogue-states-cash-frozen-european-union
Re the first point, yes, I'm sure that's part of the answer. As to the second, see my post 26597 - the Remainer newspaper, the Financial Times, has doubts whether appropriate questions can be alighted up on a second referendum partly because of the complexity on the Brexit side
