Wasn't into it at all until I met my missus ... but having been to a few internationals (she's Welsh) over the years and having played footie all my life ... it was refreshing to see a sport with a comparative absence of bling laden, play acting, precious little pussies <laugh>

Undoubtedly ... but nothing on the scale of what we've suffered ... hence putting the "it all balances out" bollocks to bed ... <ok>

Someone was saying on our board that the umpires hardly ever make decisions anymore...

You should be against, probably wouldn't have won your title had it been in a few years ago with all of Vardy's dives <whistle>

I agree the balances out argument is nonsense though. What if an incorrect VAR decision goes against you? Would that not be harder to take knowing some **** has looked at it multiple times and still got it wrong?

My view is influenced by what I have personally witnessed whilst watching my team and the extract below stands out - was nearly a riot at Leicester on this night - we had qualified for the Europa League under Martin O'Neil and had drawn Atletico in the first game (then a straight 2 way tie knock out) - got an amazing result in Madrid losing 2-1 so only needed to win 1-0 at Filbo in the return .... even now still feel that the ref was bent:

Leicester dominate the first half but then (Referee) Harrel takes centre-stage. First he gives Parker a second yellow card for taking a free-kick too quickly, then he turns down a string of strong penalty appeals for the Premier League club - triggering a meltdown by O’Neill.

Parker: I’d been booked earlier, and their lad came sliding into me near the dug-out. He kicked me and I kind of kicked him back. I got booked, which was fair enough. But to then take a quick free-kick, because he hasn’t blown his whistle, and get sent off was unbelievable. That killed it. It was never a sending off.

Kasey Keller, goalkeeper: Martin [O'Neill] was going crazy, something he used to do pretty frequently! But this was a big deal for Leicester, a unique game in the club's history, and it was being taken away from us. For me, there will always be a shadow over that game.

O'Neill: I can feel the anger I had at the time coming back. We had a huge sense of injustice - they were truly awful decisions. We had three penalty appeals and two of them were cast-iron penalties. The referee was shocking. At the time, I could hardly contain my emotions and it’s pretty difficult now I can tell you.

I'm not reading all of that but I get the gist, didn't really answer the question though.

If VAR had been used in that game then, unless the VAR official was also bent, we would have been given at least 2 penalties ... the ref never got to ref again - which tells you all you need to know ... now that's an extreme example ... but no Leicester fan that was there will ever forget it ...<ok>

The standard of refereeing has improved since 1912.

And I bet if you lost an FA Cup semi final due to an incorrect VAR decision you would never forget it either.

Of course .... but still comes back to my point that, overall, VAR will help to get such decisions right <ok>

But won't an incorrect decision be harder to take bearing in mind some **** has just spent half a century looking at it again and again?

If there are to be incorrect decisions, and you concede there will be, then surely it's easier to stomach that one bloke in real time got it wrong than multiple people watching it again and again getting it wrong?
