Grant reminds me of the old Monty Python joke - “apart from build the roads, schools & sewers, what did they ever do for us?”. I think the same about Grant - 13 goals so far this season, many of them admittedly tap ins and penalties, but his overall game remains infuriating. He missed three absolute sitters at Shrewsbury today, at least two of the three should have been buried. He created the penalty with his pace, but his first touch and hold up play remain poor and if you take away his speed, he contributes very little to the play. IMO we still need a decent striker to play off Lyle Taylor and to contribute more overall. In the event of us being promoted this season, Grant will struggle big time in the Championship.
You've pointed out the weakness in his game, lack of composure near goal. On the plus side, he doesn't hide, and still wants to score after missing a chance or three. Ian Wright was 23, wasn't he, before he started banging them in, so there's still time.
Yes he is not as clinical as some strikers but his pace scares defenders. He has got 13 goals which is an excellent return. Let us be honest if he was the real deal he wouldn't be playing for us.
One thing I will day about Grant is that he has improved since his loan at Crawley. I didn’t think he would make it, full stop. Can coaches teach composure - which he chronically lacks ? I’m not sure that they can.
No, I'm not sure either. It's down to confidence, and maybe a sports psychologist could answer your question. Flanagan of Sunderland handled him quite easily, and he would come up against more defenders of this calibre at a higher division, so L1 may be his level.
Today's Sun- Brentford have had a £500,000 bid for Grant turned down by Charlton. BUT Glasgow Rangers plan to sign Grant in the summer
That's the question isn't it. Is it better for Charlton if A ) Grant leaves now for £500,000 or maybe even more if Brentford or others make future bids B ) Grant stays until the summer, scores another 10 goals for our promotion campaign then walks away for free in the summer. I suppose the answer depends on whether Charlton win promotion or not. If Grant's goals between now and May mean we are in the Championship next season, then I don't mind him leaving for free in the summer. If however Grant's future goals fail to get us up then we're lookning at a 4th season in the 3rd tier, with Grant still walking away for nothing at the end of the season. If Grant does leave in January I think it will damage our promotion chances. We all know the money for Grant will go into RD's back pocket. But if he gets that money, he might not carry on cutting costs quite so aggressively. We have to go up this season.
Karlan can not move for free in the summer due to his age and the fact that we have offered him a new contract
I'm surprised to hear that. How many other professions are there where you cannot walk away and get another job when your fixed term contract comes to an end? Charlton can actually force Grant to remain employed by the Club, even if that is against his will? I would have thought there are some pretty serious human rights implications in an arrangement like that.
nope. i think it also depends on the division you're in. i think the amounts can be worked through some calculation. was introduced a while back to "help" get the best kids to prem level. just kicks the sh1t out of the lower league clubs
