Interesting lists over the years ... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BBC_Sports_Personality_of_the_Year_Award
Funny that an award with Personality in the title has been awarded to the likes of Nigel Mansell and Steve Davis whilst one of the great personalities, Graham Hill never was.
I’ve not read thru this thread but I don’t see how Andy Murray could be considered for this list. The football equivalent would be a young player who broke thru at the top of the game, played like a world beater for a couple of seasons then dropped off and ended up a lower league player. Nobody would ever consider a footballer like that to be considered one of the best players never mind best sportsman. The only reason people would think to consider Murray is because Britain has failed to deliver top male tennisers for so long.
Agreed, I've had dinner with him a couple of times and he was thoroughly obnoxious, you'll know who was responsible for those dinners. The same person was responsible for a golf tournament and he paired Truman with my dad, as he knew he was a hero of his, he couldn't stand him by the end of the round.
Happy the Los Angeles Merceneries lost, just like I am when Milton Keynes lose. Mansell who was mentioned here was one of the few times I was into formula one/indy car. While someone said he wasn't a big personality here on the circuits/racetracks he was, he was an attacking driver who was a fan favourite and not just in this country.
Charles Burgess (CB) Fry. England cricketer: holder of records like the most consecutive 100s, Football: England international, FA Cup Final (for Southampton) Athletics: World record long jump, also competed in 100 metres, hurdles, high jump Rugby Union for Oxford Uni and the Barbarians Was allegedly offered the throne of Albania.
i would have to put bobby charlton as top british footballer. won the world cup and european cup, was top scorer for his club and country, and played most games for england.
I would say Ian Ashbee was probably the best ever British footballer. Captained his club through all four professional divisions nobody else has ever done that.
