Tbf he is not actually saying that. He is saying that the argument against City being big spenders and therefore should not be supported because of that is undermined by the fact that we have spent big too. I am still rather surprised that some of us have not caught on that we joined the big league in terms of spending ages ago. We have spent more than anyone else apart from City and Man United. We SHOULD be challenging for the title and we SHOULD have a squad deep enough to challenge on many fronts. Why the surprise at our status as if we are punching above our weight? We are not.
a lot of our spending power has come from selling players though. if we could have kept half the players we have sold and had money to improve squad like city and chelsea have managed yeah fair point about should be challenging. if you have to sell key players to buy others it balances itself out and you don't actually improve squad. of course there is the argument as well we have brought a lot of ****e, but my first point is still valid lol.

Of course he is, Klopp knew the keeper problem needed fixing bigtime and bought Allison for a record fee, and the fix worked dividends. Kieta £50?, how much should Klopp be allowed to spend on a defensive midfielder?, what he paid was the going rate. On the flip side, if Klopp didn't spend we'd be languishing in a low spot in the league like Everton, oh okay not that low but perhaps 5th or 6th? Did the clubs who have won the title since the PL was formed spend?, yep every single one of them(including Leicester), the money spent by LFC is money earned.
If Klopp had spent scattergun based on our last chunk of managers then it could be different. But at the minute he can’t be accused of buying success.
i know bobby, probably similar between all teams now days as money is there for all. i mean saints have a manager who was playing in cl ffs. just before we had to sell key players to be able to afford others, which is weakening team.
Clubs are having to spend in order to compete. When the likes of Leicester and West Ham are spending big never mind the Chelseas and Arsenals then we have to spend big to keep up and to have a realistic challenge for the title. To be fair we have spent relatively large amounts for ages since the inception of the premiership. The biggest spenders overall have been the (red) Mancs and they have been the most successful until recently. Recently City have spent the most and it has brought them success. We have spent big with very ambitious buys like VVD and Allison at world record prices. Nothing to be ashamed of as this has brought us a very good team able to challenge for the title but yet to be shown in trophies. That is why we have to compete for the league and FA cups too. With the top (expensive) players we have bought and the money we have spent on the squad we are where we should be. It is only the mancs who have been seriously underperforming.
If we were punching our weight we'd have 30% less points then Man City. Pounds -> points doesn't work completely because you can still only put 11-14 players on the field in a game, so instead you can say that if we're about equal with Man City in the league then they should have a 30% better squad for other competitions. There's also the issue of settling. We spent big in one window, the last one. Alisson had settled instantly. Shaqiri was not a big money transfer. Fabinho and Keita have taken their time. Man City's investment has been over a longer time so they should have the benefit of more players being settled. We have one season where we've had a £50m+ net spend. Man City have five seasons where they've had a £100m+ net spend. If you look at the recent net spend (five years) then we're only 6th. Behind Everton in 5th! And with 1/3 of City's net spend. Anyway way you look at it expecting us to challenge City for the title and challenge for the CL and challenge for one or more other cups is an unfair expectation even with our recent spend.
