Bowie had some good and some of his most accessible songs in the 80s: Ashes to Ashes, Fashion, Let's Dance, Modern Love, Absolute Beginners etc. but the albums (with the exception of Scary Monsters) were pretty ****e. Tonight was a monstrosity of an album but even that had Blue Jean and Loving The Alien on it.
Agree with all that, except for Blue Jean which is utter drivel but had one of the best videos I have ever seen. There were occasions when he could actually act and could be extremely funny, forgotten the name of the wide boy he plays in the video but it was very good. I could google it but that's cheating, I will now try and remember the rest of today what his name was. My long term memory is incredibly good, not on this occasion though, it's my short term memory that is abysmal but that's all part of ageing, stands to reason you have more information stored in your head as you advance in life. Anyway, that's enough sensibility from me for today.
That's right. It lasted for about 20 minutes and was first aired on Channel 4. Terrible song but fantastic video. Oh and Loving The Alien is indeed another of my favourites of his.
Is it Absolute Beginners? Don't remember it being that good but who am I to say,BTW 3 years today **** me didn't think it was that long
I remember working Saturday overtime in the 'H' block at Broomhouse in Edinburgh for the Scottish Home and Health Department many, many, many years ago. We were allowed to listen to the radio. Anyway, it was the day that The Jean Genie was to be broadcast on Radio 1 for the first time; thank f**k there was only me and this other guy working that day! A soon as the guitar intro came on we were 'gone' .........great memories.
Are you stupid or something, buddy? We have already said the song was Blue Jean. Mind you I fancied the girl in the striped animal all-in-one number in the Absolute Beginners video.
Arcade Fire range from utter ****e to pretty good. But they're not really a band they're more of a collective as I understand it. The front man remains the same but he strikes me as a right ****er every time I've seen him perform.
I do not yet qualify for a free TV license however I do qualify for free omnibus travel throughout Scottyland!
Is it true Bowie's career was launched only because of "Space Oddity" coincided with the moon landing and was used on TV? Or is that utter guff?
There is a bit of truth in that, Fingers. It was perfect timing to coincide with what we later all discovered were the fake Lunar Landings. In fact it was more believable that The Thin White Duke himself minced around the surface of the moon rather than Louis Armstrong but then he had all the time in the world right enough.
No, but it helped him achieve some success before reinventing himself as a proper rock star. His early years (mid-60s to early 70s) was all false hope, hubris, ego and disappointment. Mind you, for every terrible song (Rubber Band, Uncle Arthur) there were signs of things to come like Let Me Sleep Beside You. Nothing he did in the 70s and 80s surpassed the Laughing Gnome mind.
