Then next season we might as well say, 'Sorry; we don't want to go into the third round draw, thanks all the same!' <doh>

Would you prefer to swap where we are now with 2012 when we won the league cup but finished 8th?

Being competitive at the top end of the table shouldn’t mean we give up on cups. We should be winning everything. However, we have come a long way in a short space of time. Klopp has worked miracles to take a what was a **** team, transform them to the top of the table, as well as competing in CL.

Just because we are where we are shouldn’t mean we have a divine right to win everything. But In time, we will continue to add more quality to this squad and we will soon be a position to compete on all fronts.

However right now, we don’t have the squad and we have to prioritise accordingly.

subs in last 5 games

City
Fabinho on
shaqiri on
sturridge on very late

arsenal
clyne on
shaqiri on (mane)
henderson for windy

newcastle
Clyne
fabinho
sturridge

wolves
clyne
lallana
wijnaludm

utd
shaqiri
henderson

so... what does that tell you?

Klopps got no faith in sturrdige or origi but he then waffled about rhythm constantly without actually giving them time on the pitch

Klopps been using clyne to rest full backs, one of fabinho or windy as midfield sub and one forward sub per game... usually shaqiri on for mane or firmino

Compare that to city.

mahrez v shaqiri.... one is used in rotation, one is used as back up to front 3 and in mifield v **** teams.
Jesus v sturridge. one is highly rated but sturridged for goals but was back by manager the other is daniel sturrdige
Sterling was kept in side up front. We played origi who started a game for 2nd time and made a total of 5 appearances all year.

Debruyne comes in we play milner
gundogan clear reserve. we play kieta another clear reserve
Keita a reserve. That’s a £50m reserve, not a bad reserve to have.

Think they might just forgive him if we win the Prem?
The FA cup has the massive advantage of starting after Christmas. So with the Prem season half way through you can realistically look at what you'll achieve in the league (which should be every clubs first priority as it pays the bills). Nobody bats an eyelid when a relegation threatened team dumps the cups and focuses on the league or promotion hopeful going out to a L1 or L2 team.

No English club (unless you're Man City) can compete on all fronts anymore meaning some competitions will have to be sacrificed. We've found ourselves top of the league with a realistic chance of winning the one competition that has eluded us for 29 years, its our White Whale, the one we want to win more than any other. If sacrificing the FA cup and League Cup gives us a better chance of winning the league then its necessary evil I'm afraid.

Obviously its a gamble since there's still about half the season to go, but its a gamble worth taking. Had we found ourselves in Man U, Arsenal, Leicester, Everton etc etc position (or had Citeh's squad) I'd be annoyed if we didn't try to win one of the cups, but we don't....so...

well he's a reserve cos he's completely out of his depth isn't he.

he made.one move after 10mins v wolves to show what he could do then faded and was ran out of it.

Shouldn’t be though. He came from a decent side in a decent league. He should be fit and up for these chances.

Started the season great, faded and not been involved much since his injury.

Must just be a slump in form/confidence then? Rave reviews and told he is a player. Surely he must offer more than Henderson and Milner apart from work rate and effort(bit of a disservice to Milner lumping him with Hendo)

Apparently a bit of a recluse and very shy. Just think he may take time to settle tbh
Injury at a time he was playing well didn't help, but yes he should hopefully offer a lot more than those going forward in his Liverpool career

You put a lot of work into these posts, so I apologise that I don't have the patience or commitment to answer each point.
So, a general reply:
Surely you can "feel" that this season is the closest we have been for a very long time? We may have been on the brink of success in the Suarez season, but we were so reliant on him, whereas we now have greater potential throughout the team. What we have now would walk the league this season if it weren't for the presence of City. We have to remain focussed on the big prize and I believe it's now or never. Win it and we'll attract better players to continue to build, fail and we won't.
Winning the FA Cup would have no influence whatsoever on bringing players in, there may be a nostalgic attachment to it amongst native fans and players but on the world stage domestic cups mean nothing.
When I think of my life watching football, I don't go to a list of trophies won and stare at it - I remember great games, great players and great incidents. The most enjoyable time I've had as an LFC fan in recent years was watching the football in 13-14, and particularly Suarez, of course. That stands out in my memory even though we won nothing. You say 2nd means nothing, but it means many great memories to me - and they're more valuable than counting cups.
It's the games that matter to me, not the lifting of trophies.
I'm not saying they're irrelevant, but great football should eventually bring trophies anyway and I'm confident that if we continue in our current vein they will come - but I'm genuinely baffled by fans who think trophies are the raison d'etre of football.
Spurs are six points behind you, that's Two losses or three draws mate.
Speaking of Spurs, they have put a full strength team out tonight in the League Cup despite being only six points (two games) off being top of the league.

Hang on a moment.

Lets be clear.

city didn't just make "8 changes"

city played a front 3 thats played during the year together.

Mahrez and sterling have been rotating all season with sane. that is a "change" but not anywhere nearcomparible with playing jones for example

They played jesus for ageuro.. well guess what thats their regular change and when ageuro was out jesus played.?

And this is why city should be winning the lesgue because their squad is head and shoulders above everyone else.

they made ‘changes’ which included playing 6 players that could arguably be included in their strongest 11

Because Pochettino needs a trophy to get his move and he's said Spurs don't have the consistency to compete for the PL

Spurs aren't the problem, City will still win the league imo. As for their team tonight, it's a semi final of a tournament where the final is at their home ground, of course they will go for it

And risk any chance of the league if they get tired or injuries <yikes>

Maybe they beat the other 3 PL teams in earlier rounds with kids?

I get your point you're making and it's why I prefer the league cup to the FA cup. By the time January comes round you can already be in a semi final, whereas the FA cup starts within days of the busiest period and just feels like a slog for the rest of the season.
