Yeah it's a different set up with us. I agree you can't really charge people to see the same band if they have played a pub for free the week before. The types of gigs we play are at venues that have bands, poets, guest speakers, theatre, comedy etc on their bill. And generally charge around £8-£12 for a ticket. Or at Festivals where there are anything from 5-20 bands on the bill and a variety of performers, from comedy to circus acts. But we have played non ticketed gigs at bars and clubs, but never for anything like £300, once we've paid our singer and soundman and paid for our fuel and expenses etc we'd be out of pocket !

I used to play in a Ska band when I first started playing in bands down here. Mainly covers, tunes like Message to Rudi, Train to Skaville etc. Love a bit of Rockabilly too. I'm not into metal though, closest thing I like to that is Faith no More or Primus.

The stuff the band I'm in now play is a mixture of Funk, Latin, Afrobeat, Soul. You'd hate it <laugh>

  8. I do not know what your experience is.

Me, I have played hundreds of gigs over the past seven years in this part of the country, and bands get paid what venues pay.

That's how it was when I used to gig all over London .

I'm calling you out on this. Sorry.

We do a couple of pub gigs for £300 because we love the venues. Mostly, we charge more. We play a lot of clubs, and they pay more.

There are a couple of tribute acts on our circuit who reputedly charge £1500 per gig. I don't know if that's true. In any event, they don't get booked very often, and when they do they bring at least 100 punters with them.

No doubt we could put our rate up to something similar, but we'd alienate 90% of our venues.

I don't play for the money, I play because I want to play. The £100 (on average) per gig that I get is pocket money for me.
