We certainly need to adjust to these changes in some way but I think we have also ended up being pushed deeper in some games and it’s still ended up the same way. But I don’t think weve ever changed to 3 at the back. Alternative is to get a CM to sit deeper as cover but I don’t think just abandoning the press helps
Under Pellegrino, every time we got even a one goal advantage, we got deeper and deeper until the inevitable happened. I certainly don’t want to see us go back to that. In retrospect, we should have changed something at 2-0 yesterday, but not sat too far off them either, so yeah, maybe three at the back. Vestergaard (who has improved massively under Ralph) did not look remotely comfortable at any point yesterday. Neither did both FB’s.
Agree with your last paragraph and that was exaggerated by our lightweight central midfield in front of the CBs. We were calling for Romeu to come on at 0-2 to sit just ahead of Stephens and Vestergaard
Unfortunately, I think the Pierre situation put paid to that. No point getting Romeu on only to pick up silly bookings or worse still 2 silly bookings etc.
As always we just needed to sit tight for a period but doesn't help with no leaders on the pitch. Zero game management.
That’s always the danger isn’t it? Unless we have an Alderweirald or Van Dijk sweeping up at the back, the right pass can open us right up.
For the record and as a partial excuse for my foolish youth, two Saints legends were my bosses at that horrific time in my life: Ballie and Ossie!
Cup bookings don't count towards league matches (and likewise the other way around). But yes, a red card for Romeu yesterday would have been disaster, in terms of the Leicester match next.
