Swansea City v Aston Villa Competition - FA Cup Stage - 3rd Round Date - 5 January 2019 Kick off - 3pm Venue - Villa Park Following an encouraging 4-1 victory away at the Madjeski Stadium against lowly Reading, next up for Graham Potter and his Swans squad is an away FA Cup against Aston Villa. Against Reading, Oli McBurnie struck in each half as Swansea City routed struggling Reading to rise a place to 12th in the Championship. Swansea took all three of their first-half chances against a fragile defence with McBurnie heading in his opener and converting a penalty after the break. In between Connor Roberts and Mike van der Hoorn rewarded impressive assists to punish Jose Gomes' side. Substitute Callum Harriott scored Reading's late consolation. Whilst the Swans were beating Reading, Aston Villa striker Tammy Abraham took his goal tally for the season to 16 in an entertaining draw with fellow play-off hopefuls QPR. Villa made an excellent start and took the lead when John McGinn, who had earlier hit the crossbar, sent in a perfect cross for Abraham to head home. Luke Freeman levelled for the visitors before the break when he smashed home from 25 yards out and Ebere Eze put them in front with a good finish after a quick counter-attack. Abraham put the hosts back on level terms from sub Anwar El-Ghazi's cross, but Conor Hourihane's free-kick was just too high and Yannick Bolasie headed over as QPR managed to hold on for 11 minutes of stoppage time. Despite piling forward in the latter stages Villa were unable to find a winner in a game that stretched well past the 100-minute mark after a collision between Villa striker Jonathan Kodjia and R's goalkeeper Joe Lumley. The teams have met on 29 occasions previously, with the Swans winning 9, losing 17 with 3 drawn. Turning to Saturday, I expect that Potter will ring the changes, as will opposite number Dean Smith. As such, it is difficult to forecast the outcome, but I suspect that the home team will run out 3-1 victors.
As you suggest Taff, there's likely to be quite a few changes in both line ups, so I'm going for a 1-0 mauling as we are used to changing our line up. Villa 0 Swans 1
In this game Potter should tinker around, give Dhanda and Asoro or others a chance, get the right team for the league game.
Hmmm... it's not like we have three games in a week, so I'd be inclined to have a crack at this - it's winnable. Keeping everyone happy with a bit of squad rotation is more likely though. The extra revenue from a cup run may be Potter's only hope of any transfer funds! What am I saying, it'll just go overseas
It is hard to predict. I suspect both teams will play weakened sides and the result could be anything. Aston Villa most likely to win due to home advantage.
