The Small Faces at least acknowledged Muddy Waters, though they altered it quite a bit.Though it was actually written by the great Willie Dixon. He wasn't credited, only legal action the 1980s rectified that.
Led Zep plagiarised the Small Faces version. Page wanted Stevie Marriott as lead singer when setting up Led Zep but he was managed by Sharon Osbourne's head banging crook of a dad, who made some dire threats. He really ****ed the Small Faces up by scuppering them touring in America.
Don't think Willie Dixon connected them. A claim against Led Zep was only made much later when his son brought it up. Willie Dixonwas one of the best song writers there was apart from being a good performer.

Another Willie Dixon song done by Muddy Waters, and plagiarised in varying degrees by many a band.

I think Alan McGee also claimed that the 3 COLOURS RED were the best rock band in the world at the time (circa Sex Pistols' 90s reunion when Creation Records put out a rather self-important PR).

The Creation were great. I won't bother offering my opinion on Oasis.

I have a cd completely dedicated to Led Zeppelin's rip offs <laugh>

When I get time I'll drag this thread back up and list all of the tracks. It's a real eye opener.

Don't get me wrong though, I ****ing love Led Zeppelin.

He didn't nick it to be fair. Him and Willie Dixon collaborated a lot. Always remember an awe struck Mick Jagger saying when they first went to the USA they were unloading their gear and a voice asked if they wanted a hand. It was Muddy Waters. The Stones thought they had died and gone to heaven.

Talking of Marriott, I used to go to school with Snips, who appeared in Hull a bit and sang with Sharks and Bajer Gurvitz Army. He was one of the last people on to see Stevie Marriott. He arrived back in .England and went to Snips' flat as they were working on something together. Marriott got drunk, had a big row with his girlfriend, stormed out and got a taxi to his house where there was a fire that night.

hey thaEd Sheeran song isn't just a riff rip off, its the whole bloody song!!
Take away his singing and you can sing marvs lyrics to it.

Ed Sheeran is a big rip off anyway, he was roadie/guitar technician to Nizlopi whom he simply copied exactly and lucked in to commercial success. He does acknowledge them as being his inspiration and gets him up on stage with him, aw bless
but at the end of the day his early stuff was simply copying.

Blur are another massive rip off, or should I say Damon Albarn. copying the vocals of the lead singer of the psychedelic furs
Richard Butler. there are much better examples but I like this song.

I must admit I enjoyed the reverse engineering of wonderwall by mike flowers pops

btw this is the fnmt isn't it?

I remember the first time I heard him was on this.Came on the radio in my mate's car as we were heading for Sunday lunch time session at Chalk Lane Club. A singer came on and started with Feelings, mouth too close to the mic, over amplified and sounded just like Star Turn's Feelings. We just looked at each other and burst out laughing. He stopped singing whilst the backing track carried on. I thought he was going to hop off the stage and have a go at us.

Early Elvis was fantastic. Like something from a different world compared to everything else about at the time.

    It's an absurd situation.
I'm attempting to find ancestors of Johann Pachelbel to represent them in suing the arse off Led Zepp - yet again.

The Lovin' Spoonful track was Summer In The City. Can't remember the Cream track he said. It was on a documentary about the making of Disraeli Gears. No doubt it will be on again some time so I will have a look when it is. I've heard Jeff Beck praise Lovin' Spoonful's lead guitarist, Zal Yanovsky as well.
    Shame what happened to him.

Music copyright annoys me a lot, music influences other music and everything has some kind of influence. Creativity is often more a group guided activity. Some genres have built a whole style about copying particular musical elements. If you go back in time classical music looked at musical influences differently, actions would be taken if someone tried to pass off a work as their own, but even taking a theme to commemorate another composer wasn't frowned at and nobody would even blink at someone reusing a motif. Musical figures were passed around everyone, what mattered was what was done with it, the creativity.

The vast amount of copyright cases are just about money grabbing and counting how many notes are similar and have no interest whatsoever about the creativity involved. This is partly why people don't tend to have much respect for cover versions and assume the original must be better. Cover versions can add something new, sometimes they even completely rescue a rather failed original effort and the original songwriter should be forever grateful in those cases that copyright gives them a windfall.

One of the big cases was My Sweet Lord, and I still don't see any important similarity. The Chiffons even redid it in the style of their song to make it seem similar which seemed very petty, no doubt encouraged by their record company.

People can come up with similar ideas independently as well, it's too much of a constraining factor on creativity the way people try and use copyright.
