Starred Jimmy Jewell and Ben Warris. Late 40's.A little after "ITMA...can I do you now, sir?" Heck,I even liked the Archers! "Aye,it's Tom Forest again! Hay up there Walter!" It's bad isn't it? I can remember years ago and now I can't fimd my blooming keys!!!!!
I do remember Jewel & Warris & ITMA just not Up The Pole. My Dad loved all the old comedy stuff & Mum liked Mrs Dales Diary & The Archers. I've listened to the Archers on & off ever since! Its still on now. Remember 'Workers Playtime' where an outside broadcast would come from a different factory everyday & they all had a singsong? Began during the war I believe to aid moral. I loved that . What simple pleasures we had compared to the expensive gadgets they need now to be happy. It was skipping ropes & hop skip & jump & the swimming pool for us plus every Saturday afternoon Going Down The Spurs. Perfect!
I remember Richard Dimbleby going "Down Your Way" to Tottenham! My favourite places to go as a kid were Lordship Rec and it's Traffic Area and Ally Pally.Mostly good memories especially riding bikes down the hill from the Palace along the fences....and my mate going over the handle bars with his mum wanting to know "what did I do to her Brian?" Oh well. Dennis by name and Dennis by nature,I suppose!
We charge £405 for the mascot experience Typical Levy...typical ENIC...embarassing stuff...all our top 6 rivals do it for free as it should be. Are we always that skint? No...ENIC uses us to make money first, last and in the middle..glory on the pitch is a secondary thought. Getting sick of it...finish the stadium off and get a price on us ENIC...thanks for the memories. I suppose Joe needs to get money from somewhere to pay for his £90 million paintings.
Ray’s A Laugh! The Navy Lark! The Charlie Chester Show! Much Binding in the Marsh! Most shows in those days depended entirely on a series of catch-phrases, which were strung together by a very thin plot. Characters all stereotypes, of course. But as a kid I loved them - and yes I remember ITMA very clearly. It set the trend for the catchphrase routines (“after you, Claude,” “no, after you Cecil”...... “I go, I come back!”)
Remember Gert and Daisy? Two-ton Tessie? Arthur English? All Workers Playtime stalwarts, if I remember it correctly.
Gert and Daisy.....Jack Warner's sisters. You have to listen to the Ukelele Orchestra of Great Britain on You Tube playing "The Devil's Gallop" (Dick Barton Special Agent a pre Bond!) Makes my eyes water! …….and now....back to football....sorry!!!!?
I’ve seen the UOGB live a couple of times - and met one or two of them - I think they’re brilliant! I love “You don’t bring me flowers” and “Teenage Spirit”. As for stirring memories of Dick Barton, not to mention Jock and Snowy - well, that’s a happy reminder of 6.45 with my dad at the tea table, just before bedtime. Happy days!!!!!
I'd sit on a stool with my nan being naughty, chewing gum and pulling part of it out of my mouth while nan smacked me with a rolled up newspaper. I just rolled up every time she smacked me! She was laughing too! Dear old nan passed when I was just 10.....after a very hard life...….!
The Ally Pally was a very short walk from our house & was a 'second home'. They had a wonderful roller skating rink where we spent every Sat. morning for sixpence. I loved the lake & paddle boats for the little ones & the miniature railway that went around the lake. There were often exhibitions in the Great Hall such as Ideal Home before it went to Earls Court. Lots of animal ones to which I loved. Also enjoyed Down Your Way, think that was on with Sunday tea! (Another tradition that seems to have passed away)
Remember all those, my favourite was Rays A Laugh with Jennifer (whats your name dear) & that ginger tom from next door!
My mates and I would cycle up to the Palace and get a boat out each and finish up with a couple of beers in The Freemason's. on a Sunday.( We were 16!!!!) Used to be a wobbly ride home...…….
I watched the first hour of the Aus v India test last night. India were well on top but after a couple of early-ish wickets the Australians were full of themselves. Despite the Indians being about 330-4, the wicket keeper kept up a stream of complete bollocks. This stream of consciousness included the usual "Bowling...Lino" but also the beauty of "We'll knock you over and you'll be all out for 350" to Pujara.......the Indians declared at 622-7. Pujara made 193.
You're think after recent troubles and sequence of poor results that they'd keep the heads below the parapet - but it's in their DNA to be obnoxious prats
Just seen the story about the unnamed England player thrown out of a nightclub for cocaine use. Didn't say current player I suppose, otherwise 50/50 whether it's one of our boys. Hopefully not Jake with a relapse. Any rumours about who is involved? https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/46757165
