Preferably favourite song you heard for the first time in 2018..

Something a little different than the doom & gloom of our ongoing relegation battle (if we can call it a battle?)

I always marvel at what Spotify tells me I should listen to as it's given me some new obsessions over the years.. Though I'm always a little confused when it puts together my 'most played' of that year as 2018 has some real left field choices which I didn't realise I was quite so in to at the time.. But I digress

My favourite song I heard in 2018 was from an artist called: Tash Sultana and everything I've heard from her has been pretty cool, but I'll pick this one.

My top streaming song from Spotify was Tellin' Lies by The Menzingers, which I think came out last year but I started listening to them in 2018. They're a really good 'punk rock' band, if you like that sort of genre. If you like this song, check out the rest of their album.

As for actual 2018, I really like Father John Misty's new album, as well as most of his discography. He's a bit too 'folksy' for some people though.

My favourite band is the Arctic Monkeys and I got around to finally seeing them live this year, best live act of 2018. I'm not overly sold on their long-anticipated new album, but this track really stands out for me and I appreciate they're always trying to reinvent their sound and try new things. Cool video too.

Arctic Monkeys album is probably the most 'Controversial' album of 2018.. In that some people love it and some people Hate it, not sure any other mainstream, charting album has been quite so 'Marmite'

Personally I really like it. I saw them in Sheffield and everything they played from the new album began to make sense, so it has grown on me massively since then

Agreed. There are a few tracks I think are pretty weak (album opener, Golden Truck Monster Truck), but taken as an entire album, it's got a great atmosphere. And yes, the live renditions really surprised me how good they were and also how seamlessly they fitted into their set. I watched them in London (the first evening) and they put on a great show.

One of my favourite bands released their new album this year. Slightly different sound to normal but I really like the whole lot. Hard to pick a favourite but I'll go with this.

Not sure what to make of that first one, but I've always liked Villagers

According to Spotify these are my 3 most played songs of 2018

Possibly the coolest song you'll ever hear.. In fact definitely the coolest I've ever heard and peak 80's Retro Wave (not sure what the video is about)

Beautiful Beautiful Bloc Party at their atmospheric best.

    Good foot thumping indie/dance/pop classic

None of these are from 2018 but I heard them all for the first time last year and clearly listened to them.. a Lot.

Must admit I'm terrible with current tunes but will view the article - I never know the names any more!

Was disappointed with the Arctic’s new one, following up AM, which was probably their best.

Richard Ashcroft’s record is nice enough but isn’t going to set the world alight. Paul McCartney’s Egypt Station likewise. Villagers have something about them. The White Album remaster is fantastic - Giles Martin continues to bring the best out of the best records ever committed to wax, and the Esher Demos stand as a brilliant record on their own.

Overall though it’s been a sorry year for both new new music and new music from established artists.

    My highlight

Isaac Gracie’s album came out. Wonderful record.

Drake’s record is also brilliant. A sprawling record with lot of styles. A lot of depth. A lot of ‘borrowing’ from the likes of Lauryn Hill and Michael Jackson. A lot of very decent cuts.
