Phil Parkinson came to public attention with Colchester, and gained kudos with his achievements at Bradford, but has 'failed' miserably at other clubs. Adrian Boothroyd achieved a lot with Watford for a spell before fading. We've had other managers that had huge highs and lows and still ride the merry-go-round. So: Is there a manager that can work in all leagues, or is it horses for courses?
Good call. A mediocre player, but with a strong link to one club. I don't know the personal reasons at Burnley, but could he make it long term elsewhere?
As a manager ( not football) myself, I know that what works in one situation will not work in another. People are very different and require very different handling. In my line of work, I am lucky that I will get time to turn situations around and will get time to recruit a team that I can mould over a long period of time. Football managers do not get this time and I can easily see why managers will do great in some situations but fail in others. If they are guaranteed 3 years, then I would expect that the good managers would rise to the top, but in reality, that is not the situation. Also, consider player power within that and it is obvious to see that football managers have a torid time getting a fair crack with clubs. Maybe we are now seeing what value our Nigel is gaining by being given some time. I know it’s early in his city career, but the fact that he was always likely to be given time considering the lack of alternatives, this May be to his benefit oddly enough. Maybe the Allams have accidentally done the club a good deed.............I’ll go and hide in a bunker for a few days...
Using Phil Parkinson as an example, he took a group of lower league players and got them over achieving. It takes a very different skill set to manage millionaires and internationals.
He was found out in the Prem. Not for a lack of management of the team, but he needed to aquire the skill set to fit in with the premiership media luvvies.
Hasn’t Boothroyd been involved with England for a few years, winning the Toulon Tournament last year as Manager of the U21s?
Was he found out or just a team with no budget. Howe has a massive budget compared to warnock I expect. And they paid over the odds in their drive up the leagues.
In this country it seems English managers are viewed as a complete failure if they don't do well at one club. Other countries they don't seem to do that. It is an head scratcher and the managers themselves probably can't answer why it doesn't work out. Mclaren springs to mind. What he did in holland was brilliant and at boro. South Gate failed at boro and got the England job. Hasn't worked out for mclaren at derby but he's doing a great job at qpr.
