Seeing as it's only tuesday and there's not really much else to discuss... I've seen the question 'best saints game you've ever seen?' asked countless times but that always seems to end up with mostly 1976 cup final and JPT 2010 (understandable really). So I thought instead I would see what people's favourite game they've seen at SMS has been. This means that even the younger ones like myself, who only got to see a few games at the dell, will be able to share their opinion. I'll start off, if I ever see a game at SMS better than the 4-3 win against norwich in april 2005 then I'll be a very lucky guy. I even went along with a norwich supporting friend so the feeling of victory at the final whistle was that little bit sweeter
The feeling after that 3.2 victory over MK Dons will take some beating as it kept us on track for promotion. The wierdest part of that game was how I didn't feel despondent at 2.0 down...confidence is a strange feeling for a Saints supporter.
I second that BassettSaint, was a fantastic game of football, after that game I really thought we'd stay up Wasn't to be I guess but definitely one of the best games I've ever seen at SMS. Another one is Newcastle, think it was 2004? Last home game of season, nothing on it, finished 3-3, great game, great atmosphere. Alan Blayney played in goal for us and pulled of a Banks-like save from Shearer, great game. Another one of my favourites has to be Walsall last year, watched the 40 minute highlights on Saints Player yesterday and reminded me how good the whole day was, one of the best days of my life.
Have to agree with that one..... Fran...... spot on...........The atmosphere at St Mary's from that match on was for me anyway, magic. The other one that comes close for me was a game we lost....and that was the game against Man utd. We made 2 mistakes that day and paid very dearly for them...... but it was a bloody good game.
That Norwich game will never be beaten, surely? Ending up miles away from your seat in celebration Although the pain that it was all for nothing in the end did hurt. The wins over Pompey in the Prem era have to be up there too. Pahars steering home the 2nd in the 3-0 win has to be the loudest noise EVER at a Football stadium?
When we beat Liverpool 2 zip totally outplayed them,it was also the game that Rafa decided he wanted to buy Peter Crouch....
Two of my favourites too. The Newcastle game was when Sturrock was in charge and I remember many entertaining games under his short tenure including a tremendous 3-1 win at the City of Manchester stadium which remains one of my favourite away games. Difficult to give an absolute favourite though although the 1-0 home win against Man United was a memorable night under Strachan. It was early in the season and we got a very late winner.
Yeah I remember that game, think it was a Beattie header from a corner in stoppage time, Fergies excuse was "Pitch was too dry". I remember that 3-1 win away to City as well, around the same time as the 4-1 win at Wolves where Claus scored.
I loved the game we stayed in championship was it Sheffield United? Stern John scored latish and there was a pitch invasion at the final whistle... The MK Dons game last season was a blinder as well, I dragged 3 or 4 mates of mine along (a couple of them are reading fans) and they all said they couldn't believe the atmosphere. Thanks to mr. forte for turning that game around!!
YES YES YES YES YES! One of my favourite individual football moments ever ! I love your picture as well, that was after Beatts put us 1 nil up in the Carling Cup match wasn't it? My first South Coast Derby, I remember them ruining the silence for Ted Bates, SMS exploded with that goal as well.
Wasn't quite injury time, 87' I think, we had to play about another 7 minutes and should have had another. Shouldn't have blamed the pitch, should have blamed howard for flapping at the cross.
It is indeed. I love Beatts just for that. That's the answer I give when people say: 'Why do you hate Pompey?' - booing Ted Bates' silence. It's not the only reason but it's my main one.
As I'm not at all interested in any opposition that comes to play Saints, as I've said before, as far as I'm concerned, their mere existence is to give us teams to play against sometimes, so I don't pick games where it has been competitive. I like to see Saints outclass their opponents, like we did against ManU, at The Dell, several times. So the FA Cup, 3rd against Spurs, without question, comes to mind. I recorded the match while I was at the ground. So glad I did, because the pundits and commentators who would normally overlook Saints had to assess us for the performance and skill we showed, and it was lovely to hear every word of it. They made the usual ...Spurs didn't turn up type comment, but they had to accept that it was because of an unquestionably, totally dominant performance by Saints. We murdered them, and frankly they got off lightly at 4-0.
FYI, my fav all time game is not 76 or JPT, but either 8-2 v Coventry at The Dell or 1-0 v Skates at Fratton; both I think in 1984. My favourite game at St Mary's is MLT's testimonial. I know it was not a "proper" game, but what a fabulous evening. If I had to go for a "real" game there, I'd say the 2 nil win against Liverpool the year we went down just for David Prutton's 33-1 first goal of the game!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nope Beddy, that 'certain man' lost his job after a 3-1 win at White Hart Lane if i remember rightly.
