Seeing as there's sweet bugger all happening at the moment i would appreciate comments on what dog the kids should have, i prefer a Collie but the kids want some scruffy little runt, i called my labrador Rodney when i was a kid,but they want to give it some stupid name like scruffy.:emoticon-0102-bigsm

Not at your stage yet,Peter. We've already signed up the goldfish(undisclosed fee), rabbit-just one- on loan from the sister-in-law to see how he settles in. Bit temperamental but they like him. Faint rumblings of dogs and cats but I'm trying to keep a lid on it ATM.
As they say about kids, we spend the first two years of their lives teaching them how to walk and talk, and the next sixteen telling them to shut up and sit down. Good luck with that.

Peter - i am just considering the same thing, my daughter has been asking for a dog almost everyday for the last 6 years, I have the additional issue of also having 2 cats at the moment to add into the mix, plus another 4 cats from my neighbours that seem to think my casa is their casa... the collie and labrador sound great to me - i also love boxers, but all will require a lot of walking and its cold in Cannock, i was thinking of a small thing like a border terrier or a cavalier king charles spaniel. The border terrier should match the name Scruffy very well. Any recommendation regards dogs for me also

I don't want to walk miles every day
I want my house to stay in reasonable shape
I don't want to clear up turds the size of elephant dung
I don't want my sofa eaten
I don't want to have to remove my cats from the the dogs mouth
I don't want the dog to generally be a pain the arse
I still want look at least slightly heterosexual when i do walk it...

Female long legged Stafforshire Terrier.................lovely dogs and so affectionate and not too much hassle.

Male ones can look a bit mean and have unfortunetly been tarnished with the Chavvy hoody look.

Frankster - i said i wanted to look a least slightly heterosexual... if i get a staffy i'm going to need to start taking steriods, become a body builder and hang about on street corners selling crack to kids.... I'm OK giving it a go but it seems a lot to ask from my 11 year old daughter.

Your right though lovely dogs, cursed by their largely unsuitable owners.

Indeed.....my GF's mum has one and she is lovely.....doesnt have that agressive look about her at all and is one of the most affectionate dogs i've ever come across.

Unfortunetley as you say, if you get a male one you have to also make sure your dressed up as a local rioter to complete the look.

    She looks like this:

Jack Russells are excellent dogs for kids. Small and scrappy, great fun.

personally i would love a boxer. great temprament, beautiful colour. Mates have labs but they moult quite a lot one has a great dane (and it's not called Nygard)...would probably be more like a small horse for a child. If You do get one, check out the owners / breeders first as their behaviour will provide an indication of what the dog could be like.
