Staff at House of Fraser told that the top floor will be turned into apartments aimed predominately at the Chinese student market, floor below that will turned into a hotel level, remaining floors will be premium brands with an eatery and no high street concessions. Wouldn't be surprised to see Flannels move in the future as they have a 12 month lease at St Stephens.
I suppose that makes sense to reuse some of the space. The men’s stuff downstairs did feel a little spread out. They’ll probably get rid of some of the brands in there that may overlap with Flannels/USC.
Surprised that Butler Whites is closed on NYE. Was going to take Mrs A for her birthday. We've booked a table at Aegean instead
A bit of a conundrum here, the top floor of Hammonds to be flats, ok apartments, the old Queens gardens police station is being converted to apartments, as of yet I don't know what the old TSB bank on the corner of Bond St/George St is going to be, my guess is more apartments. Then there was some plan to turn the building at the top of Silver St/Lowgate into apartments (opposite Mint), and many shops are closing, or are close to closing in the city centre so we have the possibility of more people living in the city centre and having to travel to one of the many outer shopping centres to shop.
There’s all the residential developments at Fruit as well, the hope is obviously that more city centre living leads to more demand for retail and dining.
Ah yes, forgot about all that, but there are bound to be other areas that I have overlooked in the city centre, or not far away, which I might have included. Not sure how the parking thing is going to be sorted out either for all this accommodation.
Wagamamas are looking for staff in Hull, so must be opening somewhere - imagine it will be either PQ or St.Stephens, surely?
Queens Gardens Police Station is another large residential development that’s not far off being completed.
Another problem will be when all these people move in they will start complaining pubs and clubs should have their hours restricted as they spoil the quality of life for what is now a residential area. And some councillors will be quite happy to support them. It is happening in Haringey. They are only granting licences until 11pm for any new licence applications and some councillors think all existing pubs and nightclubs should shut at 11pm because all the newcomers are complaining about being disturbed. There are plenty in Hull who think everybody should be tucked up in bed with a cup of cocoa by midnight to go along with it.
Apartments have just got planning permission next to the new apartment block on Wellington Street down by the Fruit Market, too. And King William House opposite the King Billy statue is being converted into apartments, with bars/restaurants on the ground floor. Brew Dog already signed up for the old Argos unit. Rumours of Jamie's Italian being signed up too. Not forgetting the council plans to build (I think the number is 800) new homes on the East Bank from Myton Bridge to Drypool bridge.
Forgot about the King Billy stuff dazzar, but 800 other homes I did not know about, well, I welcome all this development but not sure how the infrastructure will cope. I still wonder who is buying up all of these 4/5 bedroom houses springing up on Hull's outskirts and as for Kingswood it just goes on an on.
Yes, it's a bit of a developers battle ground at the moment. The trend for inner city living is growing - I've heard it's not just young professionals buying these places, but also empty nesters I.E. people who moved out to the outskirts/countryside to raise a family and now they're back on their own are just looking to enjoy life with the ease of bars and restaurants on their doorstep.
Talking of all this development, maybe wrong thread, but any news on Radisson Blue or whatever on the riverside?
It was first meant to be where the old Clarance Flour Mill was - Manor fkd that up though and it's now owned by the council and will be part of the land for those 800 (or so) new homes. The second site next to Myton Bridge I think took too long to get planning permission originally, then the design changed then had to wait to get new planning permission, then they gave up - the land is now back up for sale.
Not happening, I think the Council have compulsory purchased the site and are currently looking for a developer to take it on.
