chairman Quinn's message for pub viewers www.safc.com Niall Quinn reacts to yesterday's legal opinion delivered by an advocate of the European Court of Justice (ECJ)...
I think that's a brilliant statement from Niall. It's blunt and honest, and clearly defines the kind of people who are his gripe. The mans a legend, he's spot on if you can't afford it fair one. I know for a fact if i go pub for an away match i'll spend near on ̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâã50, more than enough for a ticket and 4-6 pints. I've heard people say they hate not having a smoke, well, that's cod ****e, plenty of us are that way inclined, was like Middlesbrough at half time in the main stand roker wing!
I've always said they should be a 5 mile cut off point around the SOL, where they can't show our home games on a matchday. A gentlemens agreement between licensee and the club. Other then that, i find it hard to criticise, as i watch the away games at the pub if im not going, and feel a tad hypocritical.
You know what psycho, a load of the landlords are supporters, that kind of makes it worse. 'The Porterfield', named after a club legend, they show moody games, a kind of irony in it.
I hate when he bangs on about this. He must think all pub watchers are alcoholics. Simple fact is you can go to a local pub and spend a tenner watch the game and have a perfectly pleasant experience. Nothing beats going to the game live obviously, however when you consider your ticket, couple of pints, food and travel it all adds up. Watching Football in a pub isn't the easy option. It's the cheap option and cheap counts these days.
Well he cannot have it all ways do not sign up for TV deals that mean 3.00 kick offs become 5.30 kick off a la spuds or change the day and time. If matches were held at 3.00 on a saturday then the going to the match habit would be a lot easier, but if because of TV a lot of migration happens, crowds will fall.
I also watch the odd away game but I will never give up my season ticket at the SoL. I still try to get to an away game every season but that's easier said than done with such high demand. I would love nothing more than to see sell out after sell out for our home games.
Premier League clubs have no say regarding Kick-off times...I get the feeling that Quinn is losing patience with Sunderland fans...He has kept his side of the bargain by improving the playing side beyond our expectations, and the crowds and atmosphere has actually deteriated during that period...What is the matter with people!!!
I know I'm in the minority but sod it. What is so wrong about a landlord wanting his pub full? Football clubs get paid vast sums to allow TV in. Don't complain when people watch! And after yesterday it's obviously not illegal.
What would it take to get 8-to-10,000 more spectators into the SOL? The atmosphere in the 1999-2000, 2000-2001 era was immense. Perhaps if you could not watch a live internet stream at home so easily or conveniently, or see it on a live foreign sat-channel at the pub, you might just get quite a few more supporters into the ground. There's a cruel irony, in that globalisation and marketing of the modern game has promoted the EPL as the world premier and huge markets have been won in Africa and East/South-East Asia. The Malaysians in Kuala Lumpur and in particular the Ghanaians in Accra want to watch live footie and they certainly can't get to the games - in some ways adversarial, it does significantly pay the bills.
Those that are near the ground are full of potential punters, or plastics. It's a case of ****ting on your own doorstep, basically.
He's completely correct in what he says. The people who go to the pubs aren't supporting their team. Until the clubs reduce admission to a sensible amount (about ̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâã12 in Germany) it'll keep happening. Syd, whats a super mod???? And congratulations Bruceysbeak, always one of the more level headed red and whites, same as Sid. Now Psycho, Whitey and Smug? It would be like putting a Rottweiller looking after a butchers shop........
The Legal Advocate just gives an opinion, it does not determine the law. However, such opinions are only rarely contradicted in practice. That said, I understand exactly where Niall is coming from. If I lived up in the NE I'd be at the SoL every other week. I'm not playing the loyal fan, but it's the option I, personally, would take. Fair enough, not everyone can afford it and I would certainly notice the cost, but it's usually a matter of choices. You go down the pub and spend ̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâã10-̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâã20 on beer or go to the match and spend ̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâã25 on a ticket? It's not a huge difference - a couple of packets of ***s in a fortnight to a smoker. Cost is certainly a real issue for some, but certainly not for all. That said, I'm off down the pub now...
Nowt wrong with a landlord wanting the pub full obviously, but if it's a pub within a close distance to the SoL and there's 48000 there every other Saturday, im sure the pub would fill up after the game fairly quick. I can understand watching away games, or if you live say a ̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâã100 train ticket away or 8 hours in the car, but if you live in Sunderland.. If the pub is half the price of going to a game, all things considered, then watch one game at home on the internet illegally, and then go to the next, as opposed to going to the pub twice. Unless you're on a night out, the money is better in our club than your pub.
So are you saying that a bloke who can't afford thirty quid to go to the SOL but can afford a tenner to watch in the pub is ****ting on his doorstep? Maybe he is and then maybe he's looking after the family finances. If the club want's full stands they have the power. Cut the price of a ticket or people will go for the cheaper option. I for one don't blame them.
If a bloke hasn't got thirty quid, then he's not a potential punter as he's not going to get in the ground is he. Tickets are cheap enough, my ST works out at 20 quid per game. If you want cheaper then that, then lets go back to the days of Jon Stead and Jeff Whitley as we'll only cover their wages.
Syd, on an unrelated topic, can't you block this muppet big chris from posting? Thought you'd be able to as a mod and all that
