Javier Mascherano claims Liverpool did not show interest in keeping him or Fernando Torres at the club.

Mascherano, who secured a move to Barcelona at the start of the season after refusing to play against Manchester City, was heavily criticised for his actions as Liverpool were seemingly forced into accepting his departure.

However, after Reds fans burned Torres shirts following his £50 million move to Chelsea on Monday, Mascherano has spoken up in defence of his former team-mate.

"I was not surprised about what happened with Fernando," he told a press conference. "When I left Liverpool, it looked as if I killed someone. It is sad that the people who did something important with the club have to leave by the back door.

"It is sad that the press and the club try to convince people that it is all the player's fault when the reality is that Liverpool didn't show the interest in keeping us in the club. The most important players didn't leave the club well.

"I spoke with Fernando and I said to him that he doesn't have to be worried because he did his best for the club. Even though he didn't win any trophies, he was a very important player and helped this club all the time."

Following Torres' sale, Kenny Dalglish said he felt players now had more power than the clubs in transfer matters.

"Maybe it would be better for everyone if there was a more even share of responsibility and power," he said. "In years gone by, the club had it all. Now it has maybe gone a wee bit towards the players."

He added: "The most important people at the club are the ones who want to be here."

beat me to the bench comment! Ya Javier we pushed you and Torres through the door.... or was that you both leaving it late? refusing to play for you and sulking for Torres. Once again have a look at Alonso.... that is how you gracefully leave a club you plonk.

Annoying, also Mascher you were doing swimmingly with West Ham before we came and saved you right? Maybe his wife also told him to say this? She seemed to be pulling all the strings anyway....

Have i missed something? We were as fans somehow terrible to these guys? So F'ing ungrateful. Mascherano was up **** creek without paddle when Rafa brought him in. Never mind Barca, he was in the West Ham reserves! The club then paid £17mil for him, why would they force him out for £20mil?! He angled for a move for 2years+, continually giving interviews about moves away. The real issue is that he was pathetic and didn't have the balls to tell his missus to stop crying and move to England with him or whatever the issue was. Your husband earns ridiculous money can you not try and make the best of England for the few years he's here? Rant over lol

Exactly, why didn't he ring Alonso after he left the club out the "back door"

The only gent out of the lot of them, I'd welcome Xabi back to Liverpool in a heartbeat. As for Masch and Torres, they can go **** themselves. Refusing to play because he wanted to leave and the other sulks for the whole season

Mascha, No-one is bigger then the club. We'll try to a degree but there has to be a point where the club lets go. Enjoy the next few years of picking splinters out of your bum while we're picking up trophies

Masch,Torres,Benayoun and Alonso all left because they didn't know better, Liverpool are the best club ever and I admit that Chelsea are a poor, aging side who don't have history, class or emitting, whatsoever. We only have money.

If he thinks Torres did his best for the club, he's clearly not watched us this season.

That's the funniest thing you've said since you arrived. The thought of Cavalieri being the daddy while you beg for more amuses me.

Masch is mistaking Hicks, Gillett and the board for everybody else.

Rafa talked him out of leaving for a season, when his agent was quoted as saying, "His wife has not been given a permanent visa. She has to go through an odyssey each time she wants to go."

Fair enough. But then he says, "Liverpool refuse to sell."

Doesn't sound like we weren't interested in keeping him.

Then: "This can be overcome with an extraordinary offer."

Which he'd have sulked at if we'd refused.

Sheesh, at least Alonso had a measly £12m offer from Juve to be glum about.

I think Mascherano was complaining about how the club hangs its players out to dry if they try to leave. For example he has always denied that he refused to play, but the way it was reported gives him the image of being a selfish prick.

With Torres as well he had every right to be unhappy but Liverpool could have kept the transfer request secret and told Chelsea to **** off and there would be no pressure to sell him. Makes him seem like a traitor.

what makes Torres seem like a traitor is that he said he would stay for the rest of his contract a couple of weeks ago and then 3 days before the transfer window closes he says he wants to leave. I wouldn't have a problem with him if he handed in a request in the first week in January, he just left us in the ****ter and we had to panic buy another striker (Carroll)

Alonso said he wanted to leave publicly but he also gave us time to find a replacement and was very humble when addressing the media about leaving, unlike Torres too. And now Mascherano has just made himself look even worse by coming out and saying this. Delighted he's warming the bench in Barca!

He probably only did that in order to force chelsea's bid through, and as that came late he was forced to out in his transfer request late too.

I know what you're saying but it still shows a huge lack of respect on his part. If he wanted to leave he could have left last summer instead of sulking about the pitch for half a season and then deciding to leave with 3 days left in the transfer window

I'm just annoyed at how he has acted since this transfer business started. I know he wanted to leave because he wants to win things sooner rather than later but Chelsea are hardly on the hunt this season either. He could have left us in the summer and been remembered as a great player but instead he decided to completely give up on the club.

    Not good enough for Torres???

Not good enough for him? **** off, he's been one of our worst players this season. If he plays to his level and we're ****, then fine he can say that and hold his head up. But when he's a very significant reason for our ****ness then he's got no right to say ****.

Barring a handful of games, he's been no better than Ngog this season. I'm not saying that because he's gone, I've been saying it for ages.

Not good enough for Torres?? **** right off, we're too good for the half arsed piece of **** we've been watching this season. The same striker who's been outplayed by the likes of Fuller and Ebanks-Blake amongst others.
