So that's not what you originally said? Government policy is a different kettle of fish. Why can't you ever accept that you're wrong?

Expecting a comment about France in 3...2...1...

Cameron was instrumental in creating government policy at the time.

Lots going on in France including the police joining action against the French government. France is in a mess at the moment.

So you won't admit you were wrong? Cameron could promise whatever and make all the claims he wanted, Parliament is sovereign. Isn't that what you Brexiters were on about? Giving Parliament control?

    You are completely wrong.

Cameron promised before the referendum that the result of the referendum would be government policy. It became government policy. It is still government policy and the default position to rejection of the PM's deal is leave on no deal. Parliament overwhelmingly backed the Tory position on Brexit.

But it's not legally binding. Cameron just said the Government, his Government, would implement the decision. He didn't have the authority to claim that.

It will be legally binding as soon as we leave. It was not illegal for him to make it government policy.

You're either squirming to avoid admitting you were wrong or you just don't understand how things work in this country.

    1. Cameron called a non-binding referendum, Parliament voted on this and we had it.
    2. Cameron said his Government would follow the result of the referendum
    2. We voted. Leave won marginally.

Cameron did not have the authority to claim the result was anything but an opinion poll. Parliament could scrap Brexit tomorrow, without breaking any rules or promises.

Please tell me what's incorrect in what I just stated?

It was Cameron and his cabinet that turned the 'advisory' referendum into government policy. You can keep calling it advisory but it remains government policy, we will be leaving in 100 days.

Not only government policy, but also law. To stop Brexit through cancelling article 50 will require a change in Law. Mr Nasty does not seem to understand the difference between the government and parliament.
Looks like Comrade Corbyn has shot himself in the foot today!
Just goes to show the state of our universities that churn out graduates that do not seem to know that 3 comes after 2!

Government policy is meaningless, Parliament is sovereign. The referendum they voted for was advisory, so basically a glorified opinion poll. Cameron did not have the authority to make it binding.

Seems like you don't understand how things work here, but that's not very surprising.

All true except the last bit. Governments can change their mind, parliament could force the governent to change its mind. It doesn't normally happen, but where , as in this case, ALL versions of leaving the EU will diminish the UK's authority, make poorer the UK's economy (govt's own estimates!) , waste billions of taxpayers money on unnecessary bureaucracy to manage the effects of separation - not including the amount spent so far, somehow ignored in the leave campaigns laughable accounting - it might happen. If i doesn't , and we do leave, then at least we can all have the satisfaction of knowing we have just had the stupidest govt. in the UK's history. A party full of turkeys who voted for xmas.

The Labour Party ensured Cameron's directive was carried out.

You seem to have forgotten the European Union (Withdrawal) Act 2018, it enshrines the leaving of the EU in Law. This Act would have to be repealed or amended to stop Article 50. A government would need to bring those changes in front of Parliament.
In addition a second referendum will also need a vote in parliament – how confident are you that there would be a majority for that?
Quick, get on Google and find out!

Parliament voted overwhelmingly to back Brexit throughout the leaving process. Both major UK political parties campaigned for Brexit during the last GE. The anti Brexit parties floundered badly at this GE. Clearly the UK public backed the referendum decision.

I haven't Googled anything, not sure where you got that from? Oh yea, right, your last post <doh>

Nothing you've posted contradicts what I said, but nevermind.

Yes it does - you keeping on typing that the referendum result is non-binding. Well they are, they are enshrined in that Act of Parliament. Now, try and understand that this is an "Act of Parliament" - this means it has been debated and passed by both Houses and is Law, not something on a Governments "to do" list. So that means it is very much binding

'Leaving' isn't set in stone. We don't have to leave, Parliament can vote against it. It's looking likely that we'll go for May's deal or no Brexit, you hardcore Brextremists are going to be very dissappointed...

Jezza has compounded his clear insult to the PM with a blatant lie about what he said. I can imagine his image and popularity has slipped further behind, especially with women. <doh>
