To some extent, but the past places a burden on the manager at all clubs. Clough casts a long shadow at Derby and Forest - with little prospect of the manager ever being able to emulate him. At Utd, the manager has additional pressures such as the handling the huge media and fan interest from all around the world and the imposing size of the club with the need to cope with the delegation of many tasks to others which managers might expect to do themselves at other clubs. It's a different job from most others even without the expectation of winning the major trophies. Not every manager who has been a success elsewhere is suited to this job. Mourinho came with the right CV and failed; so did van Gaal.
I don't think that Mourinho or van Gaal had the right mentality to be Utd manager, which was the same issue that Moyes had. It's tough for any manager to cast off the shadow of Ferguson, especially when he's glowering from the stands. It's impossible when your football is comparable to Allardyce or Pulis though, especially with the squad available. The Ex-Special One doesn't even have time or finances as an excuse. This squad is his. If he didn't want the current players, then should have replaced them.
The bottom line is that the Glazer debt burden must be serviced. For now, that means CL participation every season, whoever the manager is. As I said on the PL board, events of the past week have threatened that big-time for next season, and the club is taking no chances on that becoming certainty.

Genuinely not worried about Poch going to Utd. I quit betting about 18 months ago but if I were to bet now, when Poch does leave us, I’d have money on it being to PSG or Real. He’s got love for PSG while Real is... well, Real. Regardless of how they bin off managers it’s still many’s dream job.

Eric Cantona has been named as a possibility but I cannot see success coming with him as a coach. It's hard to remember any ex players for clubs that went onto be good coaches for their clubs. Sniffer Clark failed at Leeds for instance. Glen Hoddle wasn't great for us to name but two.
Johan Cruyff's the example that everyone should be measured by (and not certain other ex-Barca players who later managed the team...)

Granted but it's hard to see who from Utd's past could match the 4 you mentioned. Ardiles didn't cut it for us for example.

Sterling's miss was priceless. I know that he is beyond criticism but that was the ****test penalty since Zaza and it was obviously going to be **** as soon as he put the ball on the spot. Give him a chance and time to think about it and he's way beyond useless....
Ok, so according to the BBC gossip column Poch wants to be considered for the Utd job, I don't know how much truth there is in that but if he wants to go then ok, cheerio and good luck because he'll need it. It also states Eddie Howe is favourite to take us if Poch goes, in a pig's ear I hope. We need a BIG name to take the job.
