Been banging my bongo drum about this for a long time....Redders is the one player who could create something and keeps trying....sadly he needs to be in a better team. Frustrating for him, but he doesn't give up. Kudos to him. If you don't like him...tough....because I suspect he will always feature in Ralph's team.
There lies the problem. I would actually prefer anyone who can cross a ball and see a pass. It's fine terrorising a defence with fancy footwork and pace but if the ball doesn't end up on the end of a strikers head or boot then it's a waste of the rest of the teams effort in the first place. If RH can get him to connect with the strikers I'll be the first one to sing his praise
In our current team, he is hugely important. Let’s say we don’t play him. What that does is free up more of our opponents as when Redmond is there offering a threat (even one that doesn’t end up as a chance, if you like), it means the opponents need to cover that. Even Spurs who are much better than us did this. No Premier League will take the risk of not countering a threat, even if stats say the final balll hasn’t beeen good for a particular player. Can you imagine if we didn’t have that “threat” against Spurs? Trippier would have played as a right winger even more. Sometimes in football, it isn’t what the player does that counts. I do agree that I’d like an improvement in his final pass or finish, but right now he simply has to play for us as he is our no.1 threat.
I think a lot of the time we don't have enough players in the box meaning no deflection or anything ever falls to one of our players, hopefully this is something Ralph will address. Btw I notice you didn't have an answer as to who should take his spot.
You haven't proposed an argument yet. You've made a post so full of sarcasm that it overflowed. You've quoted a statistic that I've shown overlooked a beautiful bit of end product and you've now dismissed your own ability to say anything persuasive to me. http://freegifmaker.me/images/2dGAF/ Vin
So Redmond was involved in a 1 passage of play that ended in a goal, great. Hardly counters my arguement that he’s scored and assisted 0 this season does it. I’d expect him to do that week in week out on the wages he’s on and at PL level but he doesn’t and stats prove that. He may be our most “positive” or “creative” player but when that player isn’t actually very good at being just that to begin with it’s hard to understand or even accept the point you’re trying to make. How many balls did he cross in yesterday that Charlie etc actually had any chance of getting on the end of? Most of the “crosses” he attempted were easily cut out by a Cardiff defender. My ability to persuade you is irrelevant as I actually couldn’t care either way, I just don’t understand why you’re getting so chippy about it?
I'm not sure you need to hung up a couple of people not rating Redmond this season. I certainly wouldn't phrase it "so many of you". The vast majority of Saints fans, I would suggest, would put Redmond in our top two or three players this season. For years I've been making the point that "assists" is a pointless statistic.
Absolutely. Just like Long would be knocking on the door of 20 goals a season in City's team (granted he'd still miss at least three per game). Aside from leaving us (not exactly a rare career choice of our players over the years), there's nothing Redmond can about the 10 players he takes to the field with.
The reason I was "chippy" is that you were just insulting and dsimissive rather than raising any points. I posted that as one example of something he did that resulted in a goal that won't appear in the assist statistic but he created the goal out of nowhere. One example. The fact that Spurs (as I said at the time) sent a minimum of two men to face up to him, often three, is creating space for other players. The same thing yesterday. He never had to beat one man. It won't appear in the assist statistic but it's important. I've already highlighted an occasion when he passed a couple of defenders (rather brilliantly) then ended up faced with Charlie surrounded by defenders. Your assist statistic will just show another zero. Perhaps if the team had managed to get two players up in time to support Charlie, his assist statistic would look better. Unless he picked off an inch-perfect pass to somneone not surrounded by defenders but it was laid off to someone else who scored. Then Nathan's work would be meaningless by the assist statistic measure. I'm a big fan of numbers but some things don't show up in statistics. Vin
Redmond has improved loads this season compared to last season. He can actually pass now, which he couldn’t before. Hopefully he’ll add crossing and shooting onto his repertoire soon. Sadly, he is our only attacking player so he has to play week in; week out.
Ok so let’s pretend you’ve won the argument over him being an assist king. Let’s talk goals now , as far as I know he’s not contributed once all season, surely you can’t defend that as well. As a “positive creative attacking player” he should be chipping in with goals on the regular , I can’t remember the last one he scored , Everton away last season? And you can’t blame that on other players, if you get a chance you put it away, it’s purely down to him , and he’s just not clinical at that either . I’d say thats the word that’s sums him up actually “clinical” , in every aspect of his game he’s just not clinical enough, and again that shows true on his stats.
Are fans seriously getting on Redmond's case?...he has been one of the very few bright spots and with Pierre our most consistant performer this season.
All of our players have had good and bad games. I think we have decent players who individually are good or could shine in another team. We are just not a good team, they are not on the same page, confidence is so low and there is no balance between defence and attack. I still think Hughes helped us stay up last season but clearly long term unable to make us a team. Have confidence Ralph could identify players strengths and find a system that works. 3 or 4 New additions next month then we could see a big improvement on results.
We are just not a good team, _________________________ I was thinking that, up until four weeks ago. Now I'm starting to concede that we have the worst players in defence & attack in the league. No other team stands out as being worse than us in those key positions..........sadly.
