Maybe the punishment in the penalty area should vary according to whether the offence directly prevents the ball going in the goal. A spot kick for that, otherwise an indirect free kick?

Just because it's unavoidable doesn't mean that one of the teams doesn't gain from it. You are not allowed to use your arm's/hands in football so it shouldn't make a difference if it's accidental or not.

That's one idea. I think if someone handles the ball when there was no reason for them to do so then it's a penalty, if the handball is unavoidable then maybe some other punishment like an indirect free kick.

This has been my dream as well...not just for handball, but for all infractions in the box. Part of the reason the rules have been muddied so badly is that it's a binary equation with game-changing implications in what might otherwise be mundane circumstances. Penalty when a clear goal-scoring chance has been denied, IFKs otherwise, and we'll never have to hear again whether a player on the edge of the box was going down before they were clipped, or whether a defender could have gotten their hand out of the way of a rocketed cross into a crowd of players.

Indeed, we might not have got through to the next round.

I've said before that if VAR comes in I'm not going to be going to football. I stand by that. I won't renew next season. Goodbye live football.

I cannot see the justice in sentencing someone when they haven't commited a crime.

It can potentially spoil the experience for spectators. The spontaneity of celebrating a goal will be numbed by the fear of having the ref disallow it 2 minutes later.

Then you might as well say that the ball bouncing off the referee is an offence, or deviating because of a divot on the pitch. It’s all the same thing. The law currently says that handball has to be deliberate, and that accidental handball isn’t an offence.

Wow, six pages of Law 12 discussion, maybe this game was worthwhile after all.

The handball rule is going to be looked at, probably at least two seasons away from changing though.

One of the most debated areas of the Laws of the Game is handball and this topic was discussed at length during the ABM, with an agreement being reached on the necessity for a more precise and detailed wording for the different types of handball offences. The ABM duly took note of football stakeholders’ expectations, so the most significant clarifications relate to ‘non-deliberate’ handball situations, where there is an unfair ‘outcome/benefit’ due to the ball making contact with a player’s hand/arm (e.g. a goal should not be allowed if the ball goes directly into the goal from a player’s hand/arm or if a player gains control/possession of the ball from contact with hand/arm and then scores or creates a goal-scoring opportunity).
    Sauce...no more detail so far.

    That might change too.

Only read post match comments so might have been raised during the game
I watched the game live, omg I have never seen such cheat/divers in the EPL.it was embarrassing.
6’3” Jonnie Evans throwing himself to the floor anytime our new massive 5’5” forward got anywhere near him summed up what the whole team were doing right from the start. No wonder Maddison got sent off at the weekend.
Most of it wasn’t even well disguised like Hazzard and Kane, amazed
Doesn’t help when you have an appauling referee who seemed determined to cut out any physical contact
