As good as Gomez has been this season, VVD is one of (if not the) best CB’s in world football.

The impact he’s had on this team is remarkable. Whilst he’s not the sole reason for our improvement, he’s the biggest reason for it. And by some distance.

    He’s our most important player.

Because we've changed approach, yes. I'd still opt for Gomez over him though

Id rather lose vvd to transfer but Gomez to injury.

Gomez should be our Cb for the next 10 years plus so would not want to sell him. But in the short term vvd is more important so rather lose Gomez to injury

    why debate this?

    both are on long contracts.

both have their own assets and strengths.

we should be enjoying this and would be more if we could just have a bit better midfield

Just curious. Why not? There are plenty of pointless discussions on here anyway

In my view the front 3 are playing too narrow and are fairly static which leads to our play being almost entirely in front of the opposition. The only time the MF have an obvious "aggresive" pass is on a break normally following an offensive FK for our opponents.
Both FB's plus Salah & Mane rarely tried to get to the byline with or without the ball yesterday leading to a packed central defensive area.

    true.

    for me..

    a) gomez is very quick so he recovers but he is getting caught out of position still. he just gets back. he's powerful, Can pass etc etc.

    b) vvd can't be beaten in the air, organises the line and reads attackers.

they are a perfect combination...... but vvd is very very special we waited nearly 10 years for hyppia. vvd is even better than hyppia.

and carragher is a poor man's gomez ;)

This back 5 is better than rafa imo.

it's really just the midfield we need sorted. Keita is the great hope but imo we need to see what's what with the second no 8.

Agree with this (with the fix) but will add that VVD allows Gomez to take risks which sees him occasionally caught out of position. I don't think we'd see it if he was alongside Lovren or Matip.

I have to agree. both full backs need their wide man to come towards them for a pass but we seem to just want to run away and into box.

most of the time we then back pass.

the times Robertson does anything is when hes played in behind for low cross or cut back.

He does beat anyone, he just runs so needs a pass

    fix is all wrong.

vvd is the tall heading cb. hyppia.

I think I'd still go for Virge. Not just on playing abilities - he's more of a leader and I think he has a greater influence on those around him.

This formation is making Firmino play too deep which is the reason behind his indifferent form, imo.

In the short term I'd keep Virgil, regardless of what he does I think his mere presence helps the team.

Long term I'd keep Joe, I think it's quite well documented my admiration for the lad. If he was suddenly the main man though, I think the pressure would be to much.

I don't understand the change in formation, but we beat Watford 3-0 yesterday and never broke a sweat.

Last season it could of been 5-0 to us or they could have drawn 1-1 you never knew what you where getting.

This season we are much more solid, Im wondering if the reason the excitement levels have dropped is less because of a drop off on our attack and more because I don't **** myself anytime the ball comes bear our area any more.

It's still a bit sphincter-loosening though. So many years of coughing up soft last minute goals takes a while to get over.

I still get slight jitters, but nothing like what it used to be.

At one point, my gut would clench and I'd have tears In my eyes just because we'd conceded a corner. **** me we've been calamitous over the years.

vvd wins every header.... hyppia. just cos he's both rolled into one doesn't mean he's more like carragher than hyppia.

mind you saying he's both rolled into one proves how amazing he is

    I agree.

salah is not a no 9.

if you play 4231 then play it. you need a real striker leading the line that can hold ball and bring the others into it.

firmino dropping deeper and deeper just doesnt work.

it's to accommodate shaqiri or fabinho or both.

I don't think it's to accommodate Shaq, he seemed to play quite deep at times, he certainly doesn't look to make runs down the right by line.

I reckon klopp just looks to be more solid this year, you can see by the numerous matip subs that he is very keen on the clean sheet total.

It's affected the way we play, but we are still scoring goals, keeping alot more goals out and controling games better.

It may not be as scintillating to watch but the goals and results are there to see.
