    I initially thought it was numbers of House Representatives, but these numbers are too low, and then the order when they joined the Union, but no.....

    Is this to do with the number of presidencies from each state ? New York has had 5 presidents of the USA - so is the answer 3 for Texas ?

    That's right, they were 'connected'. They were all part of the Central Pangean Mountains in the Triassic period.
