I gather some reg/rec units are happy to output 12V from a 6V gen but don't rule out changing the generator so that it can charge the 12V battery. I haven't done any such conversions - my bike is 12V but so old that it is positive earth.
Cheers Woolstonian, but I don't want to start changing the 6v gen - can be a ball ache trying to get things to fit. I think what is done with some 12v conversions is that the headlight runs directly from the lighting coil, whereas all the other lamps run from the battery, which gets charged by the charging coil...doesn't solve the headlight dimming at low revs but the rest of the lamps should be significantly brighter, and it's only the dash lights and rear light (at night)that would be permanently on when riding so the battery should still charge enough I think I may see what it's like converting everything to LED and keeping the existing 6v set-up...it will still be a bit more prone to bad earths and wiring faults than a 12v system due to the higher current flowing in the 6v but is a relatively cheap and easily reversible job.
I always think, “Sore groins” when I think of what’s in that image. #gettingold #notasflexibleanymore
I have a poxy little 5 incher (oo-er-missus!). But... It has an equatorial mount, motor driven, so I took a 2 minute movie of the moon (using a DSLR) then stacked the 5,000 images together. It cancels out the atmospheric distortion (which is awful on cold nights as I'm in the middle of Southampton and I can't be ***ged to drive out to the New Forest). Does a Goto track smoothly enough for a long exposure? I've been called a Space Cadet before. I'm working on taking a series of 28 over the next year or so and creating a picture with every phase for our hall wall. Vin
Unfortunately as it is a Dob and not on an equatorial mount I can't get too long an exposure, though 2 mins is about right. No good for star trails though. A few years ago I made what I called 'Asda Cam' basically a £7 USB PC camera and modded it using an old 35mm film case holder to fit in the eyepiece tube and got this video from it (from a 5" Celestron at the time) We must talk scopes someday - got some great UV filters and filters that block out the sulphur from street lights - work great in urban areas. I LOVE Explore Scientific eyepieces - got the whole range of 82 degree ones. Almost as good as TeleVues for ½ the price. Here are a couple of photos taken with a DLSR mounted on my scope - no stacking, just a lot of trial and error! The stars is Orion's belt and the last one of Jupiter is my favourite!
Here's the raw video showing how bad the atmospheric distortion was. The noise is our pond. Was that a single shot of Jupiter? Have you ever considered stacking images? The quality you would get from a stack if you got that from a single shot would be terrific. (For anyone interested, stacking means you take the - in this case - 5,000 images in the film of the moon above then the program does some analysis that tries to work out for each pixel what was the most common value in those 5,000 shots. It gets rid of distortions) Vin
It was actually a video and then I froze frame on it and tidied it up a bit. It was from the 12” on about 180x mag on a clear night well after astronomical darkness. If you think that looked good, you should have seen it at the eyepiece. Saturn is another totally breathtaking sight. To see how good seeing is, if it is the correct time of year (slightly out now), I see if I can split the ‘double double’. Going back to Jupiter, watching a shadow of one of the Galilean moons is breathtaking too. So much to see up there all year round - the moon actually annoys me now as it is too bright and blocks out the true astronomical delights up there - galaxies and tight star clusters just blow me away. One of my favourite things is to be outside with my headphones on listening to “Benn Jordan, Pale Blue Dot” whilst looking up above. I don’t believe in god, but it is so spiritual and makes me realise how insignificant we really are. ...sorry to bore you all!
If you DM me your email we can sort out getting the video to me if you still have it. It doesn't matter if Jupiter's moving. I've got to grips with the s/w so I'll happily stack the video for you. Love to see how well it turns out - I've seen some staggering results in other people's work. Vin
Apologies if this has been mentioned elsewhere, but I saw an article on the back page of the Telegraph's Sport Section (20th November), about " I'm a Celebrity, get me out of here" 'Appy 'Arry Redknapp is in the jungle, and the writer of the Telegraph article (Jim White - a Talk Sport presenter?) thinks that this is the chance for Saints fans to get some revenge on Harry by voting for him to be picked for every Bush Tucker trial. Obviously, I think that such childish activity should be frowned upon, but it would be a shame not to spread the word, to get any and all Saints fans (and others) to VOTE HARRY - YOU KNOW IT MAKES SENSE!!!
